On Friday, October 14th, the varsity football team traveled to Rockridge. In a back
and forth shootout between the Steamers and the Rockets, the Steamers prevailed in
a dog fight that lasted until the final seconds of the game. The boys were more than
pleased to take home the title of conference champions, something the Steamers
haven't done since 2002.
Fulton started out strong ending the first quarter with a lead of 14-7. Like any other
game of the season, the Steamers chance of winning was looking up. This was all
until the fourth quarter, with two minutes and fifteen seconds left when the Rockets
scored a touchdown and a two point conversion putting the Rockets ahead 27-21. ¨I
knew after the fumble in their territory, that the game was nowhere near to being
over,” stated senior quarterback Tyler Sweenie. ¨There was still way more than enough
time for our offense to score. I had a ton of confidence going into the last drive.¨ With
49 seconds left, Sweenie threw a pass to junior running back Austin Schroeder for a
touchdown to tie it up. Senior kicker Cole McClary´s kick was good, ending the game
28-27, with the Steamers taking the win.

This past Tuesday, October 18th, the Steamers had a conference match up with the
Riverdale Rams. The previous time these two teams met, the Rams stole the win three sets;
25-20, 23-25, 26-24. The Steamers this time prevailed in two sets 25-10, 25-13. Junior
outside hitter Brooke Huizenga led the team in kills with five, freshman outside hitter Emily
Schipper was close behind with four. The Player of the Game was awarded to senior middle
hitter Jordan Price who had three kills, one ace, three blocks, and six digs.
Though that was the last conference game for both Riverdale and Fulton, it might not be
the last time these two teams see each other. Starting Monday, October 23rd the Rams are
set to host the IHSA Regional tournament. Fulton will play the winner of Prophetstown vs
Morrison the following night on Tuesday. If both Riverdale and the Steamers win their
respective Semifinal games, they would then play each other for the Regional title.
“Beating one of the top teams in our conference really showed us what we are capable of
for postseason.” replied junior defensive specialist Morgan Griebel.

Recently, the athletic department at Fulton High
School has been looking to install a video board in
the East gym and in the process, upgrade the
scoreboards. Last June, athletic director/assistant
principal Josh Knuth got the opportunity to travel to
Omaha, Nebraska to see one of the models in
action that the school had been considering
purchasing. “They are extremely bright and vivid,”
stated Knuth. “The board will allow us to create
advertisement videos and pictures, hype videos to
play before pregame warmups, as well as keep
score and show a player accolade after a made
basket. The board will also be able to be used during
presentations and assemblies in the gym.”

This addition made to Fulton High School was
funded through a donation from Coca Cola along
with additional advertising dollars from sponsors
such as Manny’s Too, Agri King, and Central Bank.
The new scoreboards should be up and have some
of their special features going for Meet the Steamers
to be held on November 10th and be fully functional
for the first home event this December.

The first ever Red Ribbon Week began in the fall
of 1988, but the actual movement started 3 years
earlier In 1985. DEA Agent Enrique (Kiki)
Camarena was taken hostage and murdered in
Mexico City. When news of this tragic incident hit
the states people united and formed the biggest
organization to help teens and young adults to
stay off drugs.

In the days, following teens and adults irritated by
the recent events wore red ribbons to raise the
awareness for the killing and destruction that
drugs cause in America. In the late 80s, the Red
Ribbon Week campaign gained momentum
throughout California and had a shot at getting
national attention with First Lady Nancy Reagan
presented the ‘Camarena Club Proclamation” to
Reagan and was able to hook the nation on the
Red Ribbon Week idea.

Camarena was hot on the trail of a multi-billion
dollar drug pipeline. Before he was able to expose
it on February 7, 1985 while on his way to a
luncheon with his wife, he was surrounded by five
armed men and forced into a speeding car. Only
his enemies would see him alive again. On March
5, 1985 Agent Enrique Camarena’s dead body
was found. He was only 37 years old.

This next week is Teen Read Week in the Riverbend School Districts.
What is Teen Read Week you might ask? Well, Teen Read Week is held
each year in October the same week as Columbus Day. In 2016, it will
be celebrated on October 9-15.
Teen Read Week is a national literacy initiative of the Young Adult
Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library
Association. It's aimed at teens, parents, librarians, educators,
booksellers, and other concerned adults.

FHS librarian, Amy Heyvaert said there are many fun things throughout
the week for staff and students, including candy for completing an
activity and the giving away of a wireless mouse each day. The theme
for all three schools is ‘Read for the fun of it’. RBMS Librarian, LeAnn
Smith said they will be celebrating Teen Read Week with the addition of
new book shelves and a new circulation desk. The non-fiction, graphic
novels, and biographies have all been boxed up until now with the
renovation of the library over the summer. The new book shelves have
just arrived and the nonfiction collection will again be available for
students to check out. The students have been anxious for the "Who
Was" series to be available for checkouts. This series of books are nonfiction and biographies that are modern, concise, and have
Accelerated Reader comprehensive tests. Students in the middle
school will also be receiving a special treat for Teen Read Week and
new bookmarks. As Dr. Seuss says “The more that you read, the more
things that you will know. The more that you will learn, the more places
you'll go.”

Do you play any other instruments?
Ally plays the flute on top of playing the piano. She has
only played the flute for 5 years in school. She only
plays and practices for school events. She doesn't
think that playing and practicing the flute outside of
school is worth it for e
r.
What is your favorite instrument, piano or flute?
The piano is so much easier for Ally. The flute is
surprisingly more confusing than the piano is. “I think
that the reason the piano is easier because i have
been playing and practicing it a lot longer than the
flute.” says Ally.

What motivated you to start playing?
Ally's sister, Taylor Curly, motivated her to start playing
due to her talent and love for the music. She then
motivated her little sister, Belle Curly, to start playing the
piano at a very young age. “It is a family thing” Ally
said.

How did you place in your first competition?
Second to last, but I mean not last so that's nice. It was a great
learning experience and I had a lot of fun competing with my
uncle though, that's all I wanted.
What is a CrossFit competition like?
I have only competed in one competition so far. There were
about 30 teams, split into different divisions. There's a men's
division, a women's division, and a combined division. You are
split into separate heats and given your own area in the gym
that is set up with all your weights. Each heat starts at the same
time and is timed on their lifts. You complete 5 different
workouts, each of which is scored differently. Then your scores
added up to get your overall score.

How does it feel to successfully complete a heavy lift?
That's actually one of the most exciting things for me,

When you can hit a PR with just a few strength sessions and

CrossFit builds strength in an unconventional way.

Currently, I know I need to improve my snatch form so I can go
