About the programme
Why choose Northumbria?
Do you have a passion for games? Do you want to
be a games designer or producer? Are you creative
and curious, with excellent communications skills?
If so...Then this is the games degree for you.
For the location:
This innovative new course has been designed in
collaboration with the games industry and it is
unique in the way that it combines both games
design and games production. As well as core
modules in game design, there is a strong business
element that runs throughout the programme and
you will learn key transferable skills in business and
management. You will also learn transferable
multimedia skills in modules such as Digital Media
Design and Technical Production, 3D Computer
Modelling, and New Media Marketing.

Year 1
Length:
In the first year you will study the basics of
computer game design and production. Key topics
of study include: Computer Games Design,
Computer Graphics, Digital Media Design and
Technical Production, Multimedia Programming
Introduction, Ludological Studies and
Fundamentals of Finance.
3 years full-time or four years sandwich

This year focuses on the application and extension
of newly developed game design and production
skills. Core topics include: Professional Game
Design, Computer Games Production,
Professionalism and Ethical Practice, and our
Graduate Enterprise module, where you will acquire
the skills to set up your own business venture. You
will also work on a group game demo project and
an individual dissertation project.

Year two further develops your gaming skills. Core
topics of study include: Designing Game
Mechanics, Game Scripting, Interactive Story and
Sound Design, 3D Computer Modelling,
Professional Development and Project
Management, and New Media Marketing.
This year is optional, but does offer you an
opportunity to gain valuable professional salaried
work experience that supports and enhances the
learning from the programme. The placement has
often led to real job opportunities.
