From “How Girl Scouting Benefits Girls”
Girl Scout alumnae display positive life outcomes to a greater degree than women who were not Girl
Scouts. These outcomes pertain to sense of self, community service, civic
engagement, education, and income. And this is the case for all Girl
Scout alumnae, across age groups/generations, social classes, and races,
and regardless of engagement in other extracurricular activities.
Council Announcements
St. Patrick’s Day Parade:
If you are interested in marching in the Kansas City St. Patrick’s Day
Parade with GSKSMO staff and other troops, please contact Joey White at
816.759.3049 or [email protected].
Parade is March 17 at 11:00am from Broadway to Linwood to 43rd St. It is
less than a 3 mile walk. Girls cannot sit on the float. It is very small
and on a trailer.
Buses will leave Loose Park around 8am and arrive at our spot in line.
Buses will be waiting at the end of the parade to take the girls back to
Loose Park to meet their parents.
Troops must adhere to girl/adult ratios which are higher for parades. A
girl and their parent, families, siblings, strollers, etc., are welcome to
march with Girl Scouts.
Patches are $2 per girl.
This is the only cost.
A registration form will need to be completed, so please contact Joey if
you want to join us.
First Aid/CPR Mini Grants Available
Learning CPR and first aid has long been a part of Girl Scouting from girls
working toward their First Aid Badge to troop leaders or other adult
volunteers becoming first aid/CPR certified so their troop can participate
in various activities or programs.
Now, any registered Girl Scout age 12 years and older (girls and adult
volunteers), may apply for a mini-grant to help underwrite the cost of first
aid/CPR certification. Both troops and individuals may apply.
The Carolyn Hodges "Great Save" Fund will pay 50% of the cost of
certification (up to $55 per person). Costs will be reimbursed after the
participant completes the class and questionnaire.
You can learn more on our website under Troop Leader Central.

• An adult assisting a girl by giving her access to the information and
training she needs but letting the girl do the selling and delivering
of cookies.
• An adult guiding a girl in understanding the finances and letting her
practice the skills.
• An adult advising a girl on how to market her cookies but allowing
her to make her make her own decisions.
• An adult helping a girl understand her responsibility to support her

Adventure Programs:


Where can girls participate in adventure programs?
o Adventure programming will be available for the spring 2016 season at Camp Prairie Schooner
and Camp Tongawood on Saturdays and Sundays.
Why should girls participate in adventure programs?
o






In adventure programs, girls get to: try new things; develop skills; progress through levels of an
activity; make their own decisions; develop courage, confidence and character; spend time
outdoors; grow as an individual and as a team and more!
What is Challenge by Choice?
o Challenge by Choice (or Challenge of Choice, or Your Challenge, Your Choice) is a philosophy
used throughout the challenge industry that boils down to the idea that each individual chooses
to what extent she want to participates in the activity. At the zipline for example, if a girl wants
to climb up to the platform and then decides she wants to climb back down to the ground, that
decision is hers to make. This means facilitators, other participants, parents, troop leaders, etc.
do not get to make the decision or pressure her into a decision she is not comfortable with. We
ask that everyone present at each adventure activity adheres to the Challenge of Choice
philosophy.
How long are sessions? What times are they?
o Programs are 3 hour long sessions, with the exception of tomahawks being two hours. Session
times are 9:00-12:00, 1:00-4:00, 4:00-7:00.
How many participants are in one session?
o Our maximum is 12 girls per session, with the exception of Zipline for large groups, which has a
capacity of 18 girls and is a 4 hour program. The group size ensures all participants are able to
fully participate in the program.
How much do adventure programs cost?
o Adventure programs are $23/girl, with the exception of Tomahawk Throwing which is $15/girl
(two hour program). This fee is to cover the cost of staffing, equipment and other supplies,
professional training, challenge course maintenance/inspection, and more.
Do entire troops have to sign up?
o Adventure programs are open to troops and individual girls to register for.
What programs are offered where? What are the age levels for each activity?
o Camp Prairie Schooner

Bling Your Booth Competition
Back by popular demand! We are excited to welcome back another cookie season filled with outstanding
cookie booths, fabulous photo voting and bigger and better prizes!!
Bling Your Booth is a contest where troops that are participating in a community booth sale can decorate
their booth / table by adding signage, lights and all out bling. Anything to showcase your Girl Scouts
Cookie Business to customers.
We want you to be as creative as possible! Remember
that our Cookie Program theme is "Dream, Design, Do"
so spotlighting that is awesome. In addition, showcasing
the 5 skills: decision making, goal setting, money
management, people skills and business ethics is always
a great way to let others know what our Cookie Program
is all about. These are just helpful hints, so pick a design
that motivates your troop - maybe it's sports, outdoors,
travel or cooking. Let your cookie booth tell your troop's
story!
Read all the details, check the submission and voting calendar and see the cool prizes at
