NEWS FROM THE HALL
Our bi-monthly meeting was held on
April 2 at 12.30pm. The following
issues were discussed:
 Heritage Week – the RSHS is
not organising a special event for
Heritage Week, but support the
different festivals organised in the
surrounding shires. The RSHS also
supports and encourages people to
visit the 3 Ipswich properties on
display on May 13. See April’s Scrub
Scribbler.
 Marburg Show – this year the
Marburg Show will be held later
than usual namely on May 13. The
RSHS will again be present with a
display.
 Marburg Community Challenge –
Last year was the first time a
community challenge was organised
during the Marburg Show and
representatives of different not
for profit organisations were able
to participate. The RSHS was very
lucky to have Joy Boughen’s
grandson Stuart representing us
and being young and strong, won the
first price for us. He will represent
us again this year and the RSHS
and friends will encourage and
support him all the way.
 The
Heritage
Consultative
Committee which is represented by
Joy Boughen for the RSHS will
have it 200th meeting. It is
important for a society such as
ours to know what is happening

AUSTRALIA AT WAR
It is the time of the year when
most people reflect on the wars
Australia has been involved in. The
wars most people are aware of are
of course the Boer War, WWI,
WWII and the Vietnam War, but
Australia has been involved in many
more wars or conflicts. Following is
a list of wars in which Australia was
involved.
Second Boer War 1899 -1902
Killed or missing 561
As being part of the British Empire,
the Australian colonies offered
troops for the war in South Africa.
For a variety of reasons many
Australians also joined British or
South African colonial units or
some were already in South Africa
when the war broke out. It is
estimated that 16.000 Australian
fought in the Boer war.
Boxer Rebellion 1900 - 1901
Killed or missing 6
A major cause of discontent in
north China was missionary activity.
Foreign missionaries had been
granted the freedom to preach and
to buy land on which churches could
be built. In 1898 a group of Boxers
(young men well trained in martial
arts) attacked a community of
Liyuantun village. By 1900 the

Boxer movement spread rapidly.
They burned Christian churches and
killed Chinese Christians.
World War I 1914 – 1918
Killed or missing 59.330
When Britain declared war on
Germany in August 1914, Australia
followed and sent troops in October
of the same year. By the end of
the war or soon after, the German
Empire, Russian Empire, AustroHungarian and the Ottoman Empire
ceased to exist. National borders
were
redrawn
with
several
independent nations being restored
or created.
Russian Civil War 1918 – 1919
Killed or missing 10
An Allied expeditionary force
included some Australian volunteers
landed in Murmansk to support the
weakening Russian front against
Germany. An extra group of
volunteers arrived in North Russia
in 1919.
World War II 1939 – 1945
Killed or missing 39.700
The invasion of Poland by Nazi
Germany is perceived as the start
of WWII and subsequently France
and the United Kingdom declared
war on Germany. Australia entered
the war on September 3 1939
following
that
declaration.
Australians served in the armed
forces in Europe, North Africa and
the South Pacific.

Malayan Emergency
1960
Killed or missing 51
1948
–
Japan occupied Malaya in 1941 and
with that the economy declined.
Rubber plantations were abandoned
and mines closed. At the end of
WWII
the
major
problems
occurred such as unemployment, low
wages and significant increases of
food costs. All this caused a
guerrilla campaign in Malay. A full
scale action began in 1955 after
several assassinations.
The first Australian ground forces
arrived there in 1955.
Korean War 1950 – 1953
Killed or Missing 382
The crisis in Korea originated in the
closing phases of the Second World
War, when control of the Korean
peninsula, formerly occupied by
Japan, was entrusted to the Allies.
When a North Korean army crossed
into the southern zone and the
capital Seoul fell, the United
Nations asked all its members to
assist in repelling the North Korean
attack. An agreement between the
UN
and
the
North
Korean
leadership was signed on 27 July
1953.
Borneo Confrontation
1966
Killed or Missing 16
1963-
The
Indonesia
Malaysia
confrontation was between the
British
Commonwealth
and
Indonesia and was fought mainly in
Borneo. Australia became involved
with Special Forces in 1964.
Vietnam War 1965 – 1973

For Australia the Vietnam War was
the longest they ever were involved
in until then. Australia was seen as

the previous experience in the

engagements took place, one of
them was the Battle of Long Tan,
whereby 18 Australians were killed
and 24 wounded.
Gulf War 1990 – 1991

force.

The war in Afghanistan started
after the Islamist terrorists
attacked
New
York
and

committed. Australian operations
were scheduled to continue until
the ISAF mission concluded in
December 2014. Approximately 400
Australian personnel are still
deployed in a variety of roles.
Iraq War 2003-2009
Killed or Missing 3
Also called the Second Gulf War.
President George W Bush claimed
that Iraq was secretly aiding
terrorists and continuing to develop
WMDs
(Weapons
of
Mass
Destruction) In March 2003,
Australia participated in the US-led
Coalition that invaded Iraq to
locate and destroy suspected
