Newsletter of the Rosewood Scrub Historical Society Volume 15 – Issue 3 NEWS FROM THE HALL Our bi-monthly meeting was held on April 2 at 12.30pm. The following issues were discussed: Heritage Week – the RSHS is not organising a special event for Heritage Week, but support the different festivals organised in the surrounding shires. The RSHS also supports and encourages people to visit the 3 Ipswich properties on display on May 13. See April’s Scrub Scribbler. Marburg Show – this year the Marburg Show will be held later than usual namely on May 13. The RSHS will again be present with a display. Marburg Community Challenge – Last year was the first time a community challenge was organised during the Marburg Show and representatives of different not for profit organisations were able to participate. The RSHS was very lucky to have Joy Boughen’s grandson Stuart representing us and being young and strong, won the first price for us. He will represent us again this year and the RSHS and friends will encourage and support him all the way. The Heritage Consultative Committee which is represented by Joy Boughen for the RSHS will have it 200th meeting. AUSTRALIA AT WAR It is the time of the year when most people reflect on the wars Australia has been involved in. The wars most people are aware of are of course the Boer War, WWI, WWII and the Vietnam War, but Australia has been involved in many more wars or conflicts. Following is a list of wars in which Australia was involved. Second Boer War 1899 -1902 Killed or missing 561 As being part of the British Empire, the Australian colonies offered troops for the war in South Africa. For a variety of reasons many Australians also joined British or South African colonial units or some were already in South Africa when the war broke out. It is estimated that 16.000 Australian fought in the Boer war. Boxer Rebellion 1900 - 1901 Killed or missing 6 A major cause of discontent in north China was missionary activity. Foreign missionaries had been granted the freedom to preach and to buy land on which churches could be built. In 1898 a group of Boxers (young men well trained in martial arts) attacked a community of Liyuantun village. By 1900 the Email: [email protected] Boxer movement spread rapidly. They burned Christian churches and killed Chinese Christians. World War I 1914 – 1918 Killed or missing 59.330 When Britain declared war on Germany in August 1914, Australia followed and sent troops in October of the same year. By the end of the war or soon after, the German Empire, Russian Empire, AustroHungarian and the Ottoman Empire ceased to exist. National borders were redrawn with several independent nations being restored or created. Russian Civil War 1918 – 1919 Killed or missing 10 An Allied expeditionary force included some Australian volunteers landed in Murmansk to support the weakening Russian front against Germany. An extra group of volunteers arrived in North Russia in 1919. World War II 1939 – 1945 Killed or missing 39.700 The invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany is perceived as the start of WWII and subsequently France and the United Kingdom declared war on Germany. Australia entered the war on September 3 1939 following that declaration. Australians served in the armed forces in Europe, North Africa and the South Pacific. Website: www.rshs.com.su 1 Malayan Emergency 1960 Killed or missing 51 1948 – Japan occupied Malaya in 1941 and with that the economy declined. Rubber plantations were abandoned and mines closed. At the end of WWII the major problems occurred such as unemployment, low wages and significant increases of food costs. All this caused a guerrilla campaign in Malay. A full scale action began in 1955 after several assassinations. The first Australian ground forces arrived there in 1955. Korean War 1950 – 1953 Killed or Missing 382 The crisis in Korea originated in the closing phases of the Second World War, when control of the Korean peninsula, formerly occupied by Japan, was entrusted to the Allies. When a North Korean army crossed into the southern zone and the capital Seoul fell, the United Nations asked all its members to assist in repelling the North Korean attack. An agreement between the UN and the North Korean leadership was signed on 27 July 1953. Borneo Confrontation 1966 Killed or Missing 16 1963- The Indonesia Malaysia confrontation was between the British Commonwealth and Indonesia and was fought mainly in Borneo. Australia became involved with Special Forces in 1964. Vietnam War 1965 – 1973 Killed or Missing 500 For Australia the Vietnam War was the longest they ever were involved in until then. Australia was seen as superior in jungle warfare due to Postal Address: PO Box 4 Marburg 4346 RSHS/Scrub Scribbler/SR/13/07/2017 the previous experience in the Malayan Emergency. Several famous engagements took place, one of them was the Battle of Long Tan, whereby 18 Australians were killed and 24 wounded. Gulf War 1990 – 1991 Killed or Missing None Australian forces were deployed under the auspices of the United Nations. The main aim for the Royal Australian Navy was to provide vessels for the multi-national naval force. War in Afghanistan 2001 – 2014 Killed or missing 44 The war in Afghanistan started after the Islamist terrorists attacked New York and Washington. Australian forces were committed. Australian operations were scheduled to continue until the ISAF mission concluded in December 2014. Approximately 400 Australian personnel are still deployed in a variety of roles. Iraq War 2003-2009 Killed or Missing 3 Also called the Second Gulf War. President George W Bush claimed that Iraq was secretly aiding terrorists and continuing to develop WMDs (Weapons of Mass Destruction) In March 2003, Australia participated in the US-led Coalition that invaded Iraq to locate and destroy suspected WMDs. Australia started to withdraw its troops in 2008 and ending its operations in July 2009. Operation Astute (East Timor) 2006 – 2013 Killed or Missing None Operation Astute was an Australian-led military deployment - E-mail: [email protected] - to East Timor to quell unrest and return stability in the 2006 crisis. The initial tasks were to allow for the evacuation of foreigners, restore stability, assess and locate weapons in possession by conflicting groups and establish a safe environment. War on ISIL 2014 - --In September 2014 the US-led coalitions under which Australia agreed to fight ISIL militarily and financially. They agreed to do so by supporting anti-ISIL forces in Iraq and Syria with supplies and air support. A war which is ongoing. OPENING MUSEUM TIMES OF OUR The hall, on 73 Edmond Street in Marburg, will be open to the public on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month. Opening times are 1.30pm – 4pm.
