January 20th 2016 ‘Sticks Down Policy’ Purpose: To allow players to self manage their hockey commitments for the best of their development while still understanding the importance of recovery Rational: The ‘Sticks Down’ policy was introduced in 2013 to ensure that players were taking the required recovery period following major tournaments. This was aligned with the Black Sticks policies at the time. This policy was reviewed in 2015 through players, coaches, schools and clubs. With the education, and therefore better understanding from players and coaches towards the importance of recovery periods, we feel that players are better positioned to make their own decisions regarding their hockey commitments following tournaments. It was also evident that players game time and commitment throughout tournaments was varied and therefore meant inconsistencies throughout this policy. It should also be noted that the Black Sticks now operate with a more informal process with players to ensure that the best decision is made for the player.
