Gamified Team Bonding Activities
This gold nugget is the result of research in using gamification to improve team cooperation and
knowledge sharing. The outcome is a game that includes activities for team bonding in newly
formed or existing teams. The game introduces informal information sharing practices and
increases personal acquaintance between the team members.
The game last 3 weeks and involves six players in addition to one facilitator. The goal of the
game is to reach a target of points (target number depends on participants) by completing a set
of activities described in game cards. Each week they will be a target of points and new set of
cards with activities. At the end of each week if the players have reached the target number of
points as a team they will get a reward provided by the facilitator. The activities are team-based,
promoting collaboration instead of individualism. Altogether it takes three weeks’ time in parallel
with usual work responsibilities, and require physical game tokens and a facilitator acting as a
game host.
The value of the nugget can vary as it depends on the scope in which it is utilized. It could be
used as input for major strategic decision making or parts of it could be used for a single
external collaboration, such as initiating new projects with other collaborators. Analysed with
details, the nugget derives artefacts such as, modes selection framework, general description of
open innovation modes or recommendations to implement open innovation opportunities,
amongst others. The model has been used inside Ericsson in multiple occasions, for example
served as input to decide if external projects and events suited the organization. Also in
planning, alignment and implementation of external projects.
Some of the possible benefits of implementing these activities include:

faster acquaintance between the team members.

improved knowledge sharing and information flow within the team.

increased team collaboration efficiency.
The Activities have been tested with three teams at Ericsson during the development phase,
and are now in use by the internal Coach Community, for newly formed teams and as a
preparation tool for Ericsson-wide corporate teambuilding activities. Although initially developed
for Ericsson, the tool is not company-specific and can be adapted for the use of others.
