About this mission Sunshine Coast Council is leading a trade mission to Auckland, New Zealand from 30 August – 4 September 2015. The key focus of the mission is to develop relationships with key decision makers attending the Commonwealth Games General Assembly to be held in Auckland from 1-3 September 2015, with the aim of attracting Commonwealth teams to train on the Sunshine Coast in the lead up to the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The mission will leverage the Sunshine Coast’s key strength as a prime sporting destination for national and international sporting teams training and high performance camps. IMPORTANT INFORMATION Date: 30 August – 4 September Location:Auckland New Zealand Apply by: 3/8/15 Who should attend? Sunshine Coast based organisations, institutions and businesses including: Sports venues and support services Accommodation providers Tourism providers with a focus on NZ The program will build on the work of Sunshine Coast Council’s Commonwealth Games Opportunities Forum and help deliver the actions outlined in the Tourism, Sport and Leisure Industry and Investment Plan developed under the Sunshine Coast Regional Economic Development Strategy 2013-2030. The Sunshine Coast’s sport industry has faced rapid development over the past decade coupled with enhancements to the facilities mix across the region. The Sunshine Coast now has a range of national standard sports facilities and is supported by a range of high-quality specialist health and medical services, to provide rehabilitation and recovery facilities and services suitable to national and international sporting teams. The Sunshine Coast offers training venues for 13 of the 17 sport disciplines planned for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The region’s track record in training high-performance athletes is evidenced with 10 athletes from the Sunshine Coast representing Australia in the 2012 London Olympics and nine participating in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, showcasing the talent and skills developing in the region. New Zealand is our second biggest international tourist market with 39,000 Kiwi’s visiting the Sunshine Coast in the year to March 2015. This is set to increase with an extended season of Air New Zealand direct flights to the Sunshine Coast increasing seating capacity by 81% from June 2015. These flights offer the ability for increased sporting and tourism linkages. 1 The region has successfully attracted local and major sporting events to the region for a number of years and as such, the opportunity is being pursued to create greater leverage in the New Zealand market with seasonal direct flights between Auckland and the Sunshine Coast, making the Coast more accessible to this market. Please note that participation in the mission is an open process and that individual participants may be competing for market opportunities in the same or similar markets. Sunshine Coast Council conducts these missions on an equitable basis and will not seek to exclude a participant on the basis that they may be competing in the same or similar market as another participant.
