programming to 200 students at
Des Moines Area Community
College’s Urban Campus.

Students may be eligible for TRiO/Student
Support Services if they meet one of the
following criteria:

of academic and personal skills, the
program focuses on deepening critical
uScholarship Award Competitions
uFirst-generation college student
Eligible candidates must also meet the
following qualifying guidelines:
thinking competencies, increasing
uService-Learning Activities
student retention, and promoting degree
uSkill Development Seminars/Workshops
completion and transferring.
uTransfer Support
uTaking a minimum of 9 college-level
credit hours
uTutorial Services
uBeing in good academic standing
uPursuing an Associate’s degree based
at the Urban Campus
We Are TRiO
TRiO began as part of President Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty.
TRiO/Student Support Services
The Educational Opportunity Act of 1964 established an experimental
Urban Campus, 1100 7th St., Bldg. 1, Rm. 210, DSM, Iowa 50314
program known as Upward Bound. A year later, the Higher Education
Act created Talent Search. Finally, another program, Student Support
Services, was launched in 1968. Together, this “trio” of federally funded
programs encourages access to higher education for low-income and/
or first-generation college students. Today, more than 850,000 students

are served by more than 2,800 programs nationwide.
DMACC-Urban Campus was awarded its first TRiO operational grant for
the 1990–1991 academic year and has been funded continuously for
two decades.

Evidence of Success:
Data submitted to the U.S. Department of Education for the 2010–2011 Annual Performance Report show that our SSS program outcomes far exceeded all grant objectives.
Objective #1–Persistence: 82.08% of all participants served persisted from
2010 academic year to the beginning of 2011 academic year or graduated and/or
transferred to a 4-year institution. Surpassed by 22.08%.

Objective #2–Good Academic Standing: 89.55% of participants served met
the performance level required to stay in good academic standing at DMACC.
Surpassed by 14.55%.
Objective #3–Graduation Rates: 40% of participants who began receiving services
in 2007–2008 graduated with an associate’s degree or certificate
within four (4) years. Surpassed by 25%.
Objective #4–Transfer Rates: 24% of participants who began receiving
services in 2007–2008 transferred to institutions of higher education that offer
baccalaureate degrees, with an associate’s degree or certificate within four (4) years.
Surpassed by 14%.
