Maverick Wrestlers Win First RMAC Dual
Win at New Mexico Highlands, 21-13

Mesa State College wrestling team notched its first Rocky Mountain Athletic
Conference dual match, 21-13, Friday night over the Cowboys of New Mexico
Highlands, in Las Vegas, N.M. The victory moved the Mavs to 2-8 overall and 1-3
in the RMAC. The Cowboys dropped to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in league duals. This
marks the second season for the wrestling program at NMHU.
MSC was victorious in five of the eight matches, including two forfeits in the
Mavs favor at the 125 and 184-pound class. Newly acquired Jason Blasdel and
Ryan Whittington for the Mavericks both won by forfeit at 125 and 184
respectively.
MSC’s Kirk Piatt (149#), Cole Johnson (165#), and Andrew Laiminger
(174#) each were victorious, all winning in decisions. Piatt won a 9-4 decision
over Nick Sanchez. Johnson defeated Chris Riding, 3-1, and Laiminger won 63 over Kyle Cambern. Piatt and Johnson are now each 5-3 in dual competition
and Laiminger improved to 4-3 in duals.
Neither team had 133-pound or 197-pound wrestler in the lineup.
The Cowboys, Ross Montour, 12-5 overall and 4-1 in dual action, won by major
decision over MSC’s Jacob Masog, 19-8, at 141-pound class. The Mavericks,
Taylor Torisk lost a close match at 157#, falling to Chris Rathjen, 7-8. NMHU
won by forfeit at the heavyweight class.
Mesa State will host its first dual of the season, Friday night at Brownson Arena,
7 p.m. The Mavs will host last years, NCAA Division II national runner-up,
Nebraska-Kearney Lopers.
