Making Sushi in Kindergarten Today, December 16, 2015, Tiaga’s Mom and her friend came to school to teach us to make sushi. Taiga’s Mom is from Japan and we were very excited to have her in to share part of their home culture and food culture with us. She brought with her: a large container of sticky rice, Nori, and rolling mats for rolling the sushi. They began by preparing the vegetable, which included carrots, cucumber and avocado. We then had the opportunity to make our own sushi rolls with their help. Here are some photographs of us at work: Rebecca and Kale were very eager to give sushi making a try. Rebecca uses a bamboo mat first. Step one: Lay the Nori flat Step two: add the sushi rice, and flatten it by wetting your fingers. Step three: Add in the vegetables you like Step four: Roll the nori with the mat, squeezing just right so not to squish the rice! Here Kale shows his finished roll, while Taiga works to make a roll for his brother. Did you receive a sushi roll? If so, your child participated in the experience today. Taiga’s Mom also taught us how in Japanese culture they say “I tadakimasu” before eating, which translates to “Thank you for food,” and once finished they say, “Gochiso sama”, which means “Thank you, it was delicious.” Curricular Connections: Literacy: talks about ideas, experiences and familiar events; expresses interests in new ideas and experiences; makes statements about topics under discussion; asks questions; follows one- or two-step directions; participates in class and group activities; exposure to new language Numeracy: measurement and estimation Citizenship and Identity: appreciates the unique characteristics, interests, gifts and talents of others; demonstrates respect for ourselves and others; listens to others in a socially appropriate manner; exposure to new cultural traditions Personal and Social Responsibility: perceives self as capable; demonstrates curiosity, interest and persistence in learning activities; shows willingness to explore and expand learning, and to try new things; expresses likes and dislikes; follows directions; seeks help if needed; listens to peers and adults; takes turns; demonstrates sharing; joins in small group activities Physical Skills and Well Being: fine motor skill development; recognizes appropriate nutritional habits; recognizes that nutritious foods are needed for growth and to feel good/have energy
