Parent & Player Handout
Dear Lady Hawk Soccer Player and Parents:
I would like to welcome each of you to the 2015-2016 soccer season. In order to maintain the high level of
success that this program has seen, parent support and player commitment is critical. We believe our staff is
highly qualified to coach your daughter and make her high school years an incredible experience.
To assure eligibility for training and UIL compliance, incoming players will need to bring the following
items the first practice, if they have not already done so:
o Completed Physical & Medical History (forms can be found on BISD Website) /player must
personally hand in to trainers
o UIL Previous Athletic Participation Form (if new to BHS)
o UIL mandated Forms (online forms can be located for completion on Rank One BISD Sports Medicine Webpage)





Sudden Cardiac Awareness form
Parent Consent Form
Illegal Steroid Form
Emergency Contact Form
Concussion Acknowledgement Form
o BHS Lady Hawk Soccer Contract (found on in this packet)
As a parent your active support is vital to the success of the program. Becoming a booster club member is
critical for the future development of our program.
The following handbook is written to clarify certain expectations pertaining to the BHS Women’s Soccer
Program. It is written as an aid to hopefully eliminate any misunderstanding that might occur during the
season. The handbook is not meant to eliminate communication between Players, Parents, and Coaches,
but to assist all parties with understanding of general information. Some of this information may be
redundant but we perceive it all as very important. Furthermore, please keep in mind this handbook is a
living document and will be updated each school year.
Thank you for choosing to be a part of Our BHS Soccer Family. Please make sure both you and your athlete
are familiar with the team expectations, rules, policies, and commitments listed in this packet. You are
important to the success of our program and I am looking forward to working with each of you!
Thanks Again,
The Lady Hawk Soccer Coaching Staff
Lady Hawk Soccer Mission Statement:
“It is the goal of the Lady Hawk Soccer Program to cultivate a life-long appreciation for athletics and
a passion for the game of soccer in each student-athlete. The Lady Hawk Soccer Program will foster
leadership, social, emotional, time management, and teamwork skills necessary to carry students
successfully into their future.
Coaching Philosophy:
As a coach, I believe in developing the student athlete mentally and physically, maximizing the
player’s potentials through a love of soccer, desire, commitment, and high intensity practices. As a
role model and mentor, I will illustrate the importance of respect, integrity, hard work, and teamwork
and try instill those values into each athlete. The Lady Hawks soccer team will utilize a variety of
tactics based on individual team needs, thus resulting in an exciting brand of soccer. We will
emphasize the importance of the fundamentals & team tactics, knowledge of the sport, and the
representation of BHS. We will attempt to teach the students about game of soccer as well as
prepare them for life’s current & future challenges. We are committed to developing our players into
well-rounded individuals ready for the challenges that await them in their future. We will always instill
in our players the understanding that the commitment to our virtues’, our families, our school and our
community must be strong to contribute to the overall success of the program.
Objectives of your Coaches












To be loyal to you in all areas.
To be totally honest.
To provide the leadership and training necessary to achieve goals.
To treat players, parents, managers, teachers, administrator’s officials and opponents with
dignity and respect.
To make decisions that are best for the “Team” first and then for the individual.
To help you mature and grow as person and player thru constructive criticism.
To abide by BISD and UIL standards.
To train players to play with good sportsmanship and to abide by the rules of the game.
To get each player to play to their full potential and put each player in a position to improve
and contribute to the team.
To promote a constructive atmosphere within our soccer program.
To challenge every player to help them be the best they can be in academics and athletics.
To maintain an open door policy.
What your Coaches CAN, WILL, and DO Assume
It is important that you understand that we are making four assumptions. The program is developed with these
assumptions paramount in our mind. If you are not in complete agreement with all four of these assumptions, it
is best for you not to ever begin the program because there will be constant problems. The assumptions
explain to you where the coaches are trying to go with the program. If you are trying to go in a different
direction, then you and the coaches will never be able to work together.
1. We assume you want to be the best athlete you can be. This is important because when our coaches
look at you they see what you could and should be and will push you to achieve your maximum. You
will never be allowed to settle for less than your best.
o
We look for a player that works at sharpening their technical ability. We must strive to do the basics as
perfect as possible (passing & receiving, dribbling, shooting). Great players are always working on these
things, even at a world class level.
o
We want players who try to exceed their mental & physical limits. Endurance, strength, speed & agility are
the physical characteristics that we are looking for.
o
We want players who can understand and read the game well. Each player should understand that this is
a vital part of the game. If you don’t understand some aspects, learn them. We are here to teach you.
o
We want players who are extremely coachable and willing to take constructive criticism in order to
become better players.
We believe that in order to be a great player effort is always in the forefront of a player’s work ethic.
And if your best players are you hardest workers then your team will only follow their lead.
o
A Great Athlete will give Maximum effort 100% of the practice & game time.
o
An Average Athlete will give 100% effort 80% of the practice & game time.
o
A Participant (or Non- Team Player) will 80% effort 100% of the practice & game time.
2. We assume you want to become a leader in various aspect of your life. This could be within your church,
your family, or your team. We believe that coaches generally facilitate a team but, all players must take
ownership of the team & the program, making their leadership vital to our success as a team.
3. We assume you want to play on a championship team. Being a Lady Hawk soccer player means that
you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive, passion, and toughness needed to
succeed at the highest level of Texas-UIL high school athletics. Our practices, our off-season, and our
summer program are designed to produce a champion. You understand that decisions made are
made with the priority being the team and the individual must come second. Players must understand
the position they play is where they help the team the most and cannot always be where they or their
parents want them to play.
4. We assume you expect to graduate with the highest grades that you are capable of making. At Birdville
High School, our students, faculty, and coaching staff pride themselves as state and national leaders in
upholding the student-athlete idea that balances a challenging academic program with the demand
of being a successful high school athlete. Being a Lady Hawk soccer player means that you have the
pledge to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime. We
will not simply try to keep you eligible; you will be pushed to make the highest grades that you are
capable of making. You will be responsible to the team to turn in all assigned work on time.
5. We assume you want to become a better person. You understand that you represent our team; you
may very well be the only athlete some people ever know. Your character is a direct reflection of our
program. We assume that you understand that you will always be a member of our athletic program.
You will understand that there are many benefits to being in the program and with these benefits
comes accountability for your actions. We will help you become all you can be off the pitch as well as
on the pitch.
6. We assume our players will conduct their personal lives in a manner that’s brings honor to themselves,
their family, their community, their district, their school, and their team. This includes but is not limited to
school performances, self respect, healthy behaviors, and social responsibility. We believe that when a
player makes a poor choice off the field they are placing themselves before their team. Teams must be
able to trust their teammates.

when no one else is watching." ~Anson Dorrance~

e-mail him at [email protected] prior to 8:00am that day. If you leave before

Coach Nichols and Coach Conaway. All unexcused absences and tardies will be made up at end


You are responsible for keeping your individual area clean and as a team keeping the locker room
neat. You are trusted to keep your locker orderly and neat. The coach will check each locker room
after practice for any items not picked up. Only athletes are allowed in the locker rooms.
Soccer Class Practice Expectations:

All players will provide maximum effort in practice sessions. Use the “acknowledgement rule” at all
times (using good listening, appropriate verbalization and eye contact.)



The way you train during practice is the way you will play in the game. Developing a training
mentality begins with YOU. As you improve, so does your team. You must be willing to push yourself
and your teammates to the edge. We will practice with a purpose. We will practice to Win.
Good or bad day on the field, hard work is always an expectation.
Train past what is comfortable for you…. Raise the bar and set the standard
Player Attitude:



Have a positive attitude toward your teammates, the program, and the staff…A committed athlete
will enhance their understanding and appreciation for the level of effort, and endeavor requires
increased ability to set goals and reach them on and off the field, and an inner strength to fight
through difficult tasks and conquer obstacles with greater determination.
Learn to overcome the urge to complain, think negatively, alienate others, take part in cliques, act
selfishly, or to engage in any other unnecessary behavior that disrupts team chemistry.
Be a Team Player…Everyone is the same. Each Player, whether a starter or a role player, has a job to
do and is an important part of the overall team success. Remember: playing for your school is a
privilege, not a right.
“A champion is someone who does not settle for that day's practice, that day's competition, that day's
performance. They are always striving to be better. They don't live in the past.”
Briana Scurry
In-Season Expectations
Pre-Season Fitness Testing
Each Player must complete a fitness test on the first day of try-outs with each player being expected
to achieve a set time. Should a player not achieve the assigned goal they will be expected to
complete extra conditioning at the end of each practice as set forth by the coach. The athlete will
complete this additional conditioning for the entire week and be retested the subsequent Monday
(should they make the squad). Should the player not make the time during the second test they
could be removed from the squad at that point in time.

Practice Expectations





If you are going from one place to another “Jog”….Always.
Players should be on time.
Players should always wear required practice attire.
We start our season around Dec 1st. This early start date will require us to train over the Winter Break,
as well as, later on during the season. We will have practice and matches over Spring Break. We will
hold training practices on assigned dates, so plan on being available over both breaks.
Players will not be allowed to participate in any type of “Blood Drive” during the season.
Practice Attendance Expectations


All practices are mandatory unless discussed prior with Coach Brown
Missed practice for any reason will result in 200 Burpees. We realize sickness and other things may
cause a missed practice here and there but just as in the classroom we will expect player to makeup workout. There are cases where an absent could be excused at coach’s digression.
Player Mental Toughness






Eliminate distractions. Focus on what you need to accomplish during practice.
Block the pain, the hurting, and the sickness out of your head for the short time you must perform.
There are times when you might rather be elsewhere, but face up to the challenge at hand. No
matter what has happened, you must win the mental battle.
You must force yourself to remain confident, enthusiastic, and positive.
You must force yourself to work harder (progressively) even when you are sick, hurting, sad, or
troubled; that is mental toughness!
Once you gain the confidence in yourself, you gain an edge that no one can take away from you!
Player Parking:

Players and Parents must park in student parking lot or next to east practice field area only
Locker Rooms:
 You are responsible for keeping your individual area clean and as a team keeping the locker room


neat. You are trusted to keep your locker orderly and neat. The coach will check each locker room
after practice for any items not picked up. Only athletes are allowed in the locker rooms.
Trust from your teammates is very valuable and very hard to regain when lost. Theft is grounds for
immediate dismissal from team.
Remove your cleats before entering the building.
Tutorials



Teachers are required to provide morning and afternoon tutorials each day. If they cannot be there
they should provide a specific instructor for you to attend tutorials with….it is your responsibility to ask
your instructor to assist you in setting up these remedial sessions.
Athletes should get tutoring, testing, and/or re-testing in the morning before school. Afternoon
tutoring is allowed from 1st Day of school thur 1st day of tryouts and End of Season – Last Day of 2nd

ASAP.

At the end of the game, do not expect to leave until we have spoken together as a team and we
have collected all equipment to appropriate location as determined by coach.
Game Day-Travel
On all team travel, we will attempt to make it a memorable and educational experience. Trips are not
important, competitions are. Transportation is not a goal – it is a method of arriving to accomplish a goal.
Never the less, we will attempt to have as good a time as possible, but we must get ourselves ready
mentally and physically to play as well as we can.
Remember the following when traveling:






No cleats on BISD Bus (per BISD policy).
You must be on the bus 15 minutes prior to scheduled departure time
IPods’ and mp3 players are allowed on the bus, but must be put away when on pitch.
Before bus ride, each game, and up until we kickoff, all players should be focused on the match.
If you have not changed into your uniform prior to match you may only change in the assigned
locker room facility.
I expect each athlete to travel to and from games together. This time together builds strong team
chemistry and friendships. I understand that “sometimes” a player may need to leave, and not
travel home on the bus. I will occasionally allow this if I receive prior written notice on the enclosed
BHS athletic travel request (48 hours in advance) and is a valid reason. You will only be permitted to
leave with your parent or guardian.
Game Issued Equipment

PLAYING TIME
NO PLAYER WILL EVER BE GUARANTEED PLAYING TIME. It is the coach’s responsibility to decide on playing
time. Making a team does not guarantee any specific amount of playing time. Age nor grade level does
not guarantee a player a position on either JV or Varsity.
The Lady Hawk Soccer coaches will use the following criteria in determining playing time. (These are in no
particular order and are at the total discretion of the coach):

Player attendance & performance at training sessions.

Player performance at matches.

Player attitude, commitment, and coachability.

Player's improvement in all environments.

Pre-match tactical plan as established by the coach.

Situational occurrences that arise during matches.

Player's representation of Program values
Typically we field a Varsity squad and JV-Travel Team only. However there are times when we carry a JV-B
squad to ensure correct level of play and development of our younger players. With respects to our JV-Travel
Team this is typically the top 14 to 16 players on our JV squad as evaluated on a weekly basis. This roster will be
posted and e-mailed the day (typically 24 hours in advance) before each JV match by the JV coach. This list
will define our Travel Team for that upcoming match. We expect “All” JV players to attend “All” JV functions
(training sessions, film sessions, weight room sessions, team activities, etc.) regardless of whom makes Varsity
and/or JV Travel Team for each match. These objectives will be mandatory in order to remain in the BHS Lady
Hawk Soccer Program. Furthermore, we will have Varsity and JV players whom are considered transitional
players. Meaning they will occasionally and sometimes often moved from one team to the other. These
decisions are made at the coach’s discretion and for the development of each player while fielding
competitive squads. Should a player or the parent/guardian not abide by these decisions they will be removed
from the program.
Team membership this year, does not guarantee team membership next year. A player could be a member of
the program this year and not next year. Placement depends on many things. “Some” examples include:
individual development, upcoming and move in talent, with leadership being paramount. Seniority (grade
level), years with the program, does not necessarily guarantee you placement on a roster.
Varsity Letter Requirements
In order to receive a Varsity Letter, the student athlete must:





Pass all classes for the calendar school year.
Participate in at least ten Varsity games for one season.
Participate in all practices after school and team activities (unless given permission to not attend by
coach).
Conduct yourself according to “All” BHS Lady Hawk School Player Expectations.
The final decision on who letters is solely up to the coaching staff.
Social Media
Athletes need to be very aware that the world is watching them by not only their actions but by their opinions
and such. We expect out ladies to conduct themselves and represent themselves and their families with honor.
Social media is a venue for things to be blogged, posted, or even “liked” that can be construed as offensive to
others. We will hold our ladies to the highest standards possible thus any action deemed as offensive will be
grounds for suspension by the Lady Hawk Coaching Staff. We encourage our ladies to keep in mind BISD policy
state that….
Engaging in serious misbehavior, as defined by the Birdville ISD Student Code of Conduct
• Using profanity, lewd or vulgar language, or obscene gestures toward others
• Sexting or other inappropriate Internet/electronic communications
• Bullying, harassment, and hazing at all times
(This is a non-inclusive list and must be confirmed by the student, student's parent/guardian, law enforcement
official or a school employee who has knowledge of a violation prior to the campus administration making a
decision.)
Off Campus Consequences per BISD Policy
Ist Offense - Suspension from extracurricular activities for 15 school days
2nd Offense - Suspension from extracurricular activities for 30 school days
3rd Offense - Suspension from extracurricular activities for a calendar year.

Parent and Spectator Guidelines & Information
As a parent, you play a special role in contributing to the needs and development of our players. Through your
encouragement and good example, you can help all the players learn good sportsmanship and self discipline.
Game Etiquette:



Parents are encouraged to help support the soccer program by joining the Upper Ninety Booster Club, participating in
all fundraising, volunteering, attending banquets, and fully supporting your daughter’s squad.
Parents are not allowed on the Pitch (Should your child get injured please stay off the field unless directed to come
down by coach, trainer, or administrator), BHS Locker Room, and Game facility Locker Room.
Parents will treat the team, managers, coaches, teachers, administrators, officials and opponents with dignity and
respect. Please encourage Fair Play, Good Sportsmanship, and Competitive Play.
All comments by parents and their guests from the sidelines must be encouraging and/or complimentary. Parents and
guests will refrain from making comments about players’ mistakes or errors. In the event of a negative situation during
the flow of the match please refrain from criticizing, questioning, booing, taunting, and using profanity.
Players are not allowed to talk with anyone in stands prior to or during the match. Parents agree to refrain from
coaching or directing their daughter during BISD sponsored games/practices.
Inappropriate conduct towards a teammate, coach, trainer, manager, referee, or opposing player during a practice,
match, or BHS / BISD soccer function will result in implementation of the follow policies and notification to the BHS &
BISD Athletic offices.
1. First infraction you will be asked to leave the current venue with the assistance of the Officer on
Duty and the BHS & BISD Administration personnel
2. Second infraction, I will request with the assistance of the Officer on duty, BHS, and BISD Administration personnel
that you be removed from the current venue and not be allowed at a BHS Soccer match for the remainder of the
current season.

Rosters and players decisions are completed by each coach and at his or her discretion.
Club experience and positions played on that team(s) has nothing to do with when, where, or how we will utilize a
player. We will fill “all” squads based on our individual and staff assessments.
Players will move from Varsity to JV and vice versa from time to time. When this happens it is done to fill a team need or
reward a player. This maybe for one or more games as determined by the coaching staff. Should a player and/or their
parents not agree with this policy they may be removed from the program as it will be assumed as them placing their
own interest above that of the TEAM.
Team membership this year, does not guarantee team membership next year. A player could be a member of the
program this year and not next year. Placement depends on many things. “Some” examples include: individual
development, upcoming and move in talent, with leadership being paramount. Seniority (grade level), years with the
program, does not necessarily guarantee you placement on a roster.
Coaches maintain the right to deny play to an athlete who isn’t meeting the expectations of Birdville High School Girls
Soccer Program (i.e. work ethic, behavior, respect for players, respect for other teams, respect for coaches, respect for
referees, respect for the program, integrity, dedication, performance, etc.) Any failure to meet the standards could
result in removal from the program.
Chain of Command:
I have an open door policy. I want any concerns and issues to be brought out in the open, discussed
respectfully, and dealt with accordingly. However, I do expect a chain of command to be followed:
Athlete Coach
Athlete & Parent Coach
Athlete & Parent & Coach Coach Brown, BHS Girl’s Coordinator
Athlete & Parent & Coach Coach Holbrook, BHS Athletic Coordinator
All of the above Ms. Scott, BHS Asst. Principal & Girls Athletics Liaison
All of the above Mr. Wells, BHS Principal
All of the above Mrs. Master, BISD Asst Athletic Director and/or Mr. Feris, BISD Athletic Director
All of the above Dr. Kemp, BISD Director Student Concerns
Parent/Coach Meeting Guidelines:




Should any questions or concerns arise they will only be addressed in a scheduled meeting, not before or after
practice and before or after a match. All meetings need to be schedule 48 hours in advance.
All parties involved must be included if being discussed (including player, parent, and/or assistant coach)
I will meet with you for no more than 30 minutes. If additional time is needed and additional meeting will need to be
scheduled.
Three Topics that will not be discussed in a Meeting:
1. Playing Time
2. Other Players/Students
3. Team Placement
