training teachers and mentors

ADRIART project deliverable serial number: 2.8
Deliverable title:
TRAINING TEACHERS AND MENTORS (REPORT)
Deliverable summary:
The experience-exchanging process of mentors and teachers (members of the project teams, and also selected
associated partners, as well as external “guest” teachers foreseen for pilot delivery and full programme
deployment) can be subsumed as a training process that encompassed both methodological and didactical
reflection as well as using the LMS platform in a specific, mostly blended way of teaching. The transfer within
the group was secured by a careful organization as well as gradual implementation of the process, tuned to the
delivery of the pilot mobilities as well as the MAP programme as a double programme, based on two institutions
(P1 and P2).
Teachers and mentors were usually briefed online first, then they underwent either a congested introduction in
the relevant project meeting a mobility itself, or were consulted by programme coordinators. Finally, the
experience was reflected both in the “lessons learned” (c.f. ADRIART project intranet and Del. 4.2) and
ultimately published in an article (Del 5.6). The trainings thus took place along the test deployments in the
second year and (Mar, Apr, Jun, Aug 2013) mostly in the third project year, when P1 already was implementing
year 2 of the programme, and P2 was implementing year 1.

Introduction of mentors and teachers to the MAP-specific methods of teaching
(P1)
Within the process of piloting the MAP programme in year 1 as well as year 2, the involved core-staff as well as
external teachers and mentors were gradually introduced into the usage of the LMS Moodle (see next chapter)
and the combination of new-media tools to enhance their teaching.
Due to a very diverse timetable of their engagement a shoulder-to-shoulder methodology was chosen to
gradually develop their course designs in the LMS, as well as build up their teaching skills in new media. The
UNG (P1) team included the following disseminators:

Rene Rusjan as programme Coordinator supported teachers in development of course designs and crossmodule integrations

Peter Purg as project leader and New Media module leader supported colleagues with know how,
selections of good practice cases and peer collaboration on their course designs

Jasminka Pavasović as Moodle coordinator at the School of Arts coordinated and set up the (see below)
online materials to support their up-skilling and stood by to help individual mentors and teachers use the
Moodle LMS
Their engagement run sporadically from June 2012 (preparation of year 1 piloting) all the way to the end of the
project. They were constantly available on Skype and per email for arranged skill-transfer sessions, and were
meeting teachers and mentors prior and after their teaching sessions to optimize designs and clarify didactic
issues.
The entire list of developed course designs can be seen in the comprehensive Del 2.6.

THE LMS (Moodle) trainings at (P1)
How to provide Moodle training for users (teachers and students, both in-house and guests) was one of the major
issues when the VŠU Moodle system was in the planning phase (already before the start of the ADRIART project).
There was a general consensus that the training should be incorporated in several levels, to assist quick moodle
adoption. Throughout the years of using Moodle, it became clear that there has been a real need for providing
different ways for training, especially for the teaching staff.
2
To improve the training, we developed moodle training e-classrooms, two for the teachers and two for the
students. The concept of building two different classrooms for both groups of users was the same – one serves as
the “playground” for exploring moodle resources and activities and another one provides moodle-learning
materials (some kind of moodle user manual).
Moodle e-classrooms, dedicated for teachers’ training are:
 Let’s play moodle: https://moodle-vsu.ung.si/course/view.php?id=33
 Moodle user manual with good examples of pedagogical use: https://moodlevsu.ung.si/course/view.php?id=8
Moodle training e-classrooms for students:
 Let’s play moodle: https://moodle-vsu.ung.si/course/view.php?id=32
 Moodle user manual: https://moodle-vsu.ung.si/course/view.php?id=6
Since the learning materials are usually not enough per se, we provided several levels (or cycles) of training:
 Annual: pre-session, taking place before school (or course) starts. That in-class training usually takes 3-4
school hours, with instructor and “lets play moodle” e-classroom as a resource.
 Ongoing: regularly scheduled opportunities throughout the school year (only for teachers) to begin,
continue or refresh their skills, mostly by moodle forum.
 Staff-led: instructions, inducted by individual teacher needs; usually by telephone or some kind of on-line
communications (e-mail, skype …)
The UNG Moodle “test” online environment of teachers was designed at https://moodlevsu.ung.si/course/view.php?id=33 in Slovenian:
The instructions for administrators and coordinators of study programmes were articulated in a separate
segment: https://moodle-vsu.ung.si/course/view.php?id=36
and were partially taken up by APU P2:

The “Mudri Training” at APU (P2)
The MAP study teachers organized a teaching programme in the collaboration with the Admin of the Mudri
platform at the University of Rijeka. The one-day teaching programme was held on the 15th of January 2014
when 12 teachers (from MAP and other APU studies) got introduction and guidelines how to use the Mudri
platform.
The Mudri Admin went through all technical phases of the course setup, and explained the use of basic Mudri
functions and buttons. Each participant created a virtual course during the training which was later erased by
the Admin.
The Mudri training was held in the headquaters of the Mudri platfom in the building close to the Academy of
Applied Art at the Univerity Campus of Rijeka. On the photo Ingeborg Fulepp, Daniela Urem, Lara Badurina,

Introduction of mentors and teacher to the MAP-specific methods of teaching
(P2)
Since MAP programme’s general modular structure and its inherent logic is quite different from how existing APU
programmes are structured, a few sessions of teachers’ and staff training have been organized for MAP
implementation. A general training for module leaders has been held by Nadija Mustapic (Intermedia Carrier
Module leader) to ensure cross-module synchronization of competence acquisition by establishing modulespecific parameters for methodologies, delivery and contents. After all module leaders have ‘adopted’ MAP
specific modular parameters, series of training sessions have been conducted by the module leaders (Lara
Badurina, Ingeborg Fullep, Tomislav Brajnovic, Igor Eškinja) to train all other course leaders (within each
module). Teachers that have been introduced to MAP programme for the first time by accepting to teach certain
MAP courses have thus been given guidelines in structuring syllabi and teaching methodologies.
In addition, several MAP teachers have held training sessions with APU leadership, student services and other
relevant administrative personnel in order to ensure thorough understanding of MAP specificities and provide
adequate administrative support for the programme and enrolled students.
Some teachers (Nadija Mustapic,Igor Eskinja, Tomisalv Brajnovic, Lara Badurina) were in intense contact with
Peter Purg from UNG from whom they learned how to deal with mobility course on-line and on-site design. That
collaboration and learning process was particularly intense during the implementation of mobilities with
discussions on methodology and methods of teaching. The intense condensed mobility courses require a focused
and precise schedule in the implementation of the MAP specific programme structure. Deliverables 2.7 and 4.2
give insight in such good experiences and knowledge transfer.
LMS Trainings and Up-Skilling of P3, P4 and external stakeholders:
P3 Was introduced to the Moodle by co-designing the course designs for the “Responsive Art in Public space” two
stages of mobilities in 2013 and 2014, with Nayari Castillio and Daniela Brasil as well as Richard Dank, c.f.
https://moodle-vsu.ung.si/course/view.php?id=55
Richard Dank also collaborated on the 2012 Ljubljana mobility LOGOS (https://moodlevsu.ung.si/course/view.php?id=54 ), whereas the 2013 mobility “GRAB.ROGG.LAND”
()http://www.adriart.net/grabrogland-monomaterialisation-rog did not resort to using Moodle, as the small
group of students and collaborators decided to go for mailing.based communication.
5
TUG also introduced to the system the following student assistants:
Paul Frick , Jacob Wegerer and Mateusz Pankiewicz for LOGOS 2013, and Helene Thuemmel for RAPR 2014
mobility.
Another external stakeholder using the LOGOS 2013 Moodle system based course design was Luka Frelih of
Ljudmila (NGO from Ljubljana).
The HILOVV Moodle setup in 2013 and 2014 was also used by Valeria Cozzarini, acting as “location scout” for
the course (otherwise affiliated with the venetian University Ca Foscari).
The course that was developed together with Bob Cotton as external teacher (using the LMS) by Peter Purg was
named “Transmedia Narratives” and was used as a good practice example of a topic-focussed course design:
