Dallas - Connect Innovate UK

Feedback from Interoperability Workshop:
Graham Worsley and David Calder
TSA Conference 15 November 2011
Workshop Format
• Graham Worsley provided an overview of the Assisted Living
Innovation Platform -ALIP (slides available)
• Graham provided on overview of the final R&D investment in ALIP
known as DALLAS – Delivering Assisted Living Lifestyles at Scale
• A corner stone of DALLAS will be interoperability of the technology
and services for Assisted Living
• David Calder then asked participants in the workshop to validate
some key aspects of DALLAS with regard to interoperability
• A worksheet (next slide) was used to capture input
• Three teams participated over two sessions by providing their input
• The comments and opinions of the workshop participants are
captured in this presentation
• Participation was around 25 people, with 17 attending workshop 1
(split into team A and Team B) and 8 attending workshop 2
• Some questions sought discussion and comment from participants
and some questions were closed ‘voting’ questions
The Impact of Technical Interoperability on Integrated
Telecare and Telehealth Services.
To check with a knowledgeable stakeholder community that DALLAS has got the right approach, please

Q2: We will sort out technical interoperability, so what are
the BIG Issues for provision of joined up services?
Do you believe equipment suppliers
will actually work together and get
their equipment to work together?
We are already able to provide basic
alarm or health monitoring services,
so are we actually interested in doing
preventative, wellness monitoring?
Are we ready with the right training
and workforce development?
Are the NHS incentives actually going
to change so that we will get
rewarded for providing for
independent living ?

Voting Questions
TSA Conference 15 November 2011
Analysis 1
• Feedback concerning DALLAS’ Interoperability
assumptions based on the voting session:
– Strongly positive about moving the game on to
include prevention and wellness monitoring
– Strongly negative about the NHS changing its model to
provide incentive for independent living solutions
– Unsure on whether providers are ready to combine
telecare and telehealth services and whether or not
training is available to extend new services in terms of
workforce development
– There was a slight negative bias concerning how
willing equipment suppliers might be in getting behind
open systems
Analysis 2
• Feedback concerning DALLAS’ Interoperability
assumptions based open questions
• The big challenges: Common Themes
– Lack of social and healthcare integration at present
– Education and Training
– Interoperable and scalable services might encourage LA’s
to work together more
• Benefits and Dis-benefits
– Improved communication and cooperation between health
and social services were generally anticipated
– Improved response, efficiency, flexibility and reduced costs
– Concerns about risk assessment, reliance on manufactures
and how they might manipulate the market were noted
Conclusion
• Our workshop participants supported the concept, and
value that might derive from, interoperability of
technology and services
• They felt progress was feasible in this space, but that
challenges remain
• They continue to have some reservations about how
the market will develop
– Role of manufacturers
– Role of NHS (incentives)
– Training and education
• The DALLAS concept, the inclusion of the
interoperability challenge and way it was described in
the opening presentation was broadly accepted
