Jurors Chris Winfield, Winfield Gallery, Carmel CA (http://www.winfieldgallery.com/) Sylvia White, Sylvia White Gallery, Ventura CA (http://www.sylviawhite.com/) Terms of Entry • This show is open to all physical visual art media (no electronic media. Installation concepts should be discussed with the Phantom team prior to submission.) • This is a fine art show rather than a fine craft show. However, craft submissions will be accepted if the show curators consider them to have a clearly evident fine art aspect. The decision of the curators at the intake day is final. (This show will be curated by the Phantom organizers, as the last one was.) • Work that was accepted into the first Phantom show is not eligible. Other work submitted to the first show is eligible if it meets all other requirements. We are not requiring, but do encourage artists to submit work we have not seen before. • There are no geographical limits to who can enter. • Work that is not adequately prepared for display will not be accepted. (Example: sawtooth hangers and ribbon are not allowable substitutes for conventional braided picture wire.) Work must be framed or designed to be frameless. • 3-D artists must provide standard rectangular or cylindrical pedestals for sculpture in neutral white, neutral grey, or black as needed. Plant stands, tables or non-pedestal furniture will NOT be allowed to substitute for pedestals. • All work must fit through the doors. Maximum installed height is 8 feet. • Artists are responsible for delivery and pick-up of your work promptly within the schedule posted above. We do not have storage available after Sunday, June 2. • All artwork submitted must be original work of the artist submitting it. • Artists participating in the show must sign up for a turn sitting in the gallery to supervise the show. • Work entered in the show is not required to be for sale. • All work is to be displayed for the duration of the show. Buyers must pick up at the end of the show or arrange with the artist for shipment. • Every effort will be made by the Phantom Project to preserve and protect artwork submitted to this show, but neither the Phantom Project, Central Coast Sculptors Group, nor San Luis Obispo Museum of Art will be responsible for theft, damage, or loss of artwork. • Submission constitutes agreement with these terms. Fees One or two pieces entered : $25 Three pieces entered : $35 Cash Awards and Commissions • 20% commission will be held out of all sales transacted during the show. Artists retain 80%. • Cash awards will be awarded to 3 sets of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners as described below. Entry process • Complete the attached form twice per artwork in advance and bring it, with your entry fees and artwork to the gallery during one of the intake periods listed above. DO NOT send forms or images to the Phantom team in advance. All submissions must be brought to one of the two intake periods. • You may post images on the Phantom Project Facebook page, but this is not part of the entry process. This is a different kind of show—read carefully The first Phantom show drew far more high quality entries than we could possibly display in the available 2,200 square feet of the space that was available. This meant that we had to send a lot of wonderful art home without being seen by the public. While unfortunate, this is typical of juried shows. This time we have nearly 5 times the space available and we will use it to do something a little different. We will hang all the art that is accepted at intake. After intake but prior to hanging, two solo jurors will jury the work independently, without comparing notes. They will pick the work they want in their version of the show, and after they are done, we will label their choices and hang the show. Each juror will pick approximately 60 to 80 pieces to include in their version of the show along with 3 winners each. Jury winners will get cash awards at the opening reception. We will hang both jurorsʼ shows in a manner that clearly identifies them relative to the rest of the work. We will also have a Peopleʼs Choice ballot throughout the duration of the show for a third set of 3 winners, to be tallied and announced at the closing reception. All work accepted into the show is eligible for these awards, whether selected by the jurors or not. The 3 highest vote totals will be the Peopleʼs Choice winners. Peopleʼs Choice winners will also receive cash awards. Instructions to both the jurors and the voting public will be, “Pick the work you like.” Acceptance by one or both jurors simply means they liked it. The hidden assumption that we all make about the jury process is that it is about choosing the “best” work. Our process will illustrate that this assumption is flawed, and that jury selection, while important, is not the sole arbiter of quality. All the art, both chosen by jurors and not chosen, will be displayed in the show so that the artists and the public can see what the jurors saw, and form their own opinions about it all, then express those opinions in the balloting. We expect both of the jurors and the public to overlap but differ in their choices. The net effect will be an exhibition not only of the art, but also of the jury process, illustrating the variability, complexity, and subjectivity of that process. It will be three concurrent versions of the same show: two juried versions and the overall show, all displayed together. We have designed the show this way because we have 10,000 square feet to work with, and want to create a learning experience for artists and the public about the nature of juried shows. Future shows will almost surely be in more confined quarters, so this may be the only opportunity we have to do such an inclusive study of the jury process. Questions?
