Physician acquisitions, for example, continue at a rapid pace, and the supply chain must be able to implement cost effective and efficient integration strategies. Additionally, as new rules of reimbursement go into effect, healthcare executives will be paying very close attention to the cost of the supply chain. Their goal is to ensure that their organizations can continue to provide quality care in a sustainable and affordable manner. Supply chain leaders, therefore, must be able to demonstrate how they are prepared to help ease the financial strain. With more than eight years of experience in healthcare manufacturing and distribution, Will Benton currently leads the Marketing team responsible for Owens & Minor’s Distribution and OM Solutions services. Will holds a Bachelor of Science degree from The Citadel and a Masters of Business Administration degree from Duke University. 10:45–11:45 Criteria Based Evaluation & Decision Making for Product Analysis & Conversion Joannie Nei, RN, BSN, CMRP, Clinical Value Analysis Specialist, St. Cloud Hospital Economic challenges have increased the need for clinical personnel and Supply Chain Management personnel to collaborate assuring stewardship of resources by making decisions for supplies and equipment based on criteria needed by the patient, staff and facilities. Now, more than ever, engaging stakeholders such as nurses, physicians and others in the process of product evaluation is paramount to a successful product implementation and provision of safe patient care and optimal outcomes. This session will describe processes to gain stakeholder buy-in and participation with product evaluation, selection, and implementation based on clinical, environmental and financial criteria from the collaborative perspective of supply chain management and clinical leadership. Nei has been employed at Saint Cloud Hospital in the clinical evaluation of products for over 10 years and is currently Clinical Value Analysis Specialist in Supply Chain Management. Past experiences have included working on several different post surgical care units caring for patients after abdominal, urological, ENT, and ortho surgery. She has also been employed as intravenous clinician and orientation educator. Currently, she is responsible for clinical value analysis of clinical products and equipment utilizing evidence based practice protocols, follow-up on product questions and concerns, product backorders, product recalls, latex allergy process, sharps safety, education of products and equipment and implementation of products and equipment. VanVactor, FAHRMM, Chief of Logistic, USA MEDDAC- Alaska Too often managers hear the expression, "we've never done it that way before" when proposing a change in the way an organization performs. In this presentation, based upon research, leaders can influence changes in organizational behavior through collaborative communications - permitting ownership of processes at multiple levels of employment throughout an organization. Some of the key take away points will include what collaborative communication is, how it can be inculcated into organizational processes and behavior, who can use collaborative communications, and how it can help improve processes throughout an organization. While tailored to healthcare supply chain management, the concepts can be equally applied across multiple industries and fields of study. Dr. Jerry D. VanVactor is an active duty medical service corps officer in the United States Army where he is the director of logistics for Bassett Army Community Hospital in Fort Wainwright, Alaska. He has been in the military since 1989 and has been involved in a variety of supply chain management roles since 1994. His education includes a Doctor of Health Administration, Masters in Healthcare Management, and a Bachelor of Science degree. Other education includes professional certification as a Materials and Resource Professional, Lean Six Sigma Green and Black Belts, and he is a Demonstrated Master Logistician through the International Society of Logistics. Learn about expense management strategies being implemented in healthcare. Trends in healthcare contracting will be reviewed and their impact on supply chain management. Tom Harvieux has been the vice president and executive director for supply chain management at Sanford Health since March 2008. The $3.3 billion Sanford enterprise consists of 36 hospitals located in five states. Tom previously served as Chair of the Upper Midwest Consolidated Service Center (UMCSC) operations committee in 2011 and 2012. The UMCSC has initiated over 200 supplier contracts for the 112 member hospitals with a combined annual supply spend of $4.1 billion. Prior to this role, Tom was director of supply chain operations at Fairview Health Services in Minneapolis, MN and has over 29 years of supply chain experience. Tom holds a Bachelor of Arts from Metropolitan University and a Master’s in Supply Chain Management from Florida Institute of Technology. 9:45 – 10:45 New Healthcare Bill’s Affect on Provider and Consumer Lawrence (Lorry) Massa, President and CEO - Minnesota Hospital Association Learn about today's healthcare direction and how the new healthcare bill will affect the healthcare provider as well as the consumer. Current healthcare status will be related to mergers, consolidation, and other events happening in facilities. Hear how this will affect healthcare in the future. Lawrence J. Massa became president and CEO of the Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA) in October 2008, continuing a 25-year career as a prominent hospital and health-care leader in the Upper Midwest. Serving as a policy-maker, hospital executive and grassroots advocate, Massa most recently led Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minnesota. There, he acted as CEO of the municipal organization for almost 15 years. During his tenure, he oversaw the completion of a $52 million renovation and expansion project. Before that role, Massa gained more than 10 years of for-profit and nonprofit health-care executive experience in South Dakota, Iowa and Minnesota. He also served as South Dakota’s secretary of health under Governor William J. Janklow. Massa has been an instrumental leader at the Minnesota Hospital Association even before he took the helm as president in 2008. His work there has included serving as chairman of the board of directors, the policy and advocacy committee and the political action committee. Massa also represented Minnesota hospitals and championed health-care reform initiatives through his work on several state and national boards and organizations, including the American Hospital Association’s Regional Policy Board; Healthy Minnesota, a multi-stakeholder collaborative; the Minnesota Health Care Reform Review Council; and VHA Upper Midwest. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Massa earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of South Dakota and a master’s of science in business administrative services from Iowa State University. 10:45 – 11:45 Children's Hospital Materials Management goes to Saudi Arabia Jerry Holm, Value Analysis Coordinator and Bill Maurer Logistics Manager Jerry and Bill spent 16 days in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia examining the NICUs in their two main children’s hospitals to observe their logistics/purchasing processes in an effort to help them improve these areas. Bill and Jerry will share a light presentation of their experiences including many photos. Bill Maurer has been working in Materials Management for more than 30 years. His background includes, warehousing, transportation, forecasting, purchasing. He started as a driver for a telecommunications company and worked his way up to Purchasing Supervisor. He's been involved in healthcare for the past 12 years and is currently Logistics Manager for Children's Hospitals and Clinics of MN Jerry Holm has nearly 25 years experience in the healthcare industry with most of those in the materials related positions. His experience in materials started back in the late 70s as a storeroom clerk, then courier, buyer, senior buyer, and now Value Analysis Program Coordinator. Jerry is currently the Value Analysis Coordinator at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.
