SCOTTISH GYMNASTS READY TO TURN THEIR COMMONWEALTH GAMES DREAMS INTO REALITY The 2014 Commonwealth Games are still over a year away but the Scottish Gymnastics 2014 hopefuls have already started preparing for the Games. The Games start on the 23rd July 2014 and there will be eight full days of action-packed gymnastics: Artistic and Rhythmic Gymnastics. The Scottish Woman’s Artistic Gymnastics 2014 Squad is filled with gymnasts who are already training hard to compete at the Commonwealth Games. Three of whom are at the Glasgow School of Sport: Amy Regan, Carly Smith and Cara Kennedy. 18 year-old Amy Regan, who competed as part of team Scotland in the last Commonwealth Games in Delhi, explains how she has matured into an even better gymnast compared to the previous games: “Delhi has taught me many things about myself and how I handle pressure and coming into the games on Glasgow I feel that I have really been able to focus on these to make my overall performance much stronger.” Amy Regan competing at the Northern European Championships. Carly Smith, her fellow pupil at the Glasgow School of Sport is also hoping to compete in 2014 and says the Games being in Glasgow means a great deal: “I am really looking forward to the Commonwealth Games being in Glasgow as it has been a huge part of my childhood and I am looking forward to performing in front of a home crowd.” Carly Smith performing Adam Cox competing at the Commonwealth her floor routine. The Men’s artistic Scottish Squad is due to have an exciting team as Olympic Bronze medal winner Daniel Purvis, who trains in Southport YMCA, England and 2012 Olympic hopeful Daniel Keatings are aiming to compete as part of Team Scotland at the Games. Adam Cox, a Scottish gymnast, competed at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne 2006 and Manchester 2002. He retired from gymnastics in 2010 but has decided to make a come back for the 2014 Games. He trains alongside Liam Davie and Douglas Ross who both went to the Youth Commonwealth Games in 2011 and are both hoping to compete in Glasgow too. This is what he thinks about the Commonwealth Games: “I think the games will be great for Scotland to have some of the greatest athletes in the world competing in Glasgow. Having the two Daniel’s coming to compete will motivate us and hopefully help us win a team medal.” The 2014 Commonwealth Games make dreams come true for many people and there is only a year left for these gymnasts to turn their dreams into reality and compete as part of Team Scotland at the Games in Glasgow. On a personal level, I’ll discover next year if all my hard work and training has paid off and I fulfil my dream of competing of at a Commonwealth Games and for it being in Glasgow makes me even more determined to get there.
