PIAA POINT OF EMPHASIS
TECHNICAL FOULS
GAME TOOL WHEN
NECESSARY
Should be made like any other call.
Without malice or aggressiveness.
Do not invade coach’s or player’s space.
Same look and intensity as a foul or
violation.
Make the call and move into your position.
Do not get in a verbal confrontation with
the coach or player.
TEAM TECHNICALS
Failure to supply the scorer with the
name and number of each squad
member.
Failure to designate the starters by
the appropriate time frame.
Changing a starter after the
designated time frame.
Adding a name to the squad list after
the designated time frame.
TEAM TECHNICALS CONT’D
Changing a player’s number after the
designated time frame.
Identical numbers when discovered.
Using television monitoring or replay
equipment.
Failure to occupy assigned bench.
Delaying the starting of either half.
Requesting an excessive time-out.
TEAM TECHNICALS CONT’D
After resuming play procedure is used,
further delaying the game.
Having more than 5 squad members
participating simultaneously.
Failure to have all players return at
approximately the same time after a timeout or intermission.
Players locking arms or grasping a
teammate in an effort to restrict opponent’s
movement.
TEAM TECHNICALS CONT’D
After any of the following warnings:
a. Committing a plane throw-in
violation.
b. Committing a free throw delay.
c. Interfering with the ball after a
score.
d. Not having the court ready to play
following any time-out. (One warning per
team per game)
PLAYER TECHNICALS
Dunking before the game or during
intermissions.
Substitute entering without reporting.
Substitute entering without being
beckoned. (Flagrant during fight)
Participating after changing his/her
number without reporting it. (Flagrant)
Wearing an illegal number, illegal shirt
or pants/skirt.
PLAYER TECHNICALS CONT’D
Removing his/her jersey or pants/skirt
within the confines of playing area.
Grasping either basket or dunking or
stuffing a dead ball. (Exception
grasping to prevent injury)
Intentionally slapping or striking the
backboard on a try for goal.
Placing a hand on the backboard or
ring to gain an advantage.
PLAYER TECHNICALS CONT’D
Delaying the game by preventing the
ball from being made live promptly.
Goaltending during a free throw.
Reaching through the plane and
touching or dislodging the ball.
Obstructing an opponent’s vision to
include the player with the ball.
Faking being fouled.
PLAYER TECHNICALS CONT’D
Committing an unsportsmanlike act:
a. Disrespectfully addressing or
contacting an official.
b. Using profane or inappropriate
language.
c. Baiting or taunting an opponent.
d. Climbing on or lifting a teammate.
e. Knowingly attempting another player’s
free throw.
f. Intentionally or flagrantly contacting an
opponent during a dead ball.
COACH TECHNICALS (DIRECT
OR INDIRECT)
Any infraction of the bench conduct rule.
(Direct)
Failure to replace a disqualified player or
injured player within 30 seconds. (Direct)
Player participating after being disqualified.
(Direct)
Entering the court without the official’s
permission. (Direct)
COACH TECHNICALS CONT’D
Dunking before the game or
intermissions by a player is also
credited to the coach. (Indirect)
All players are considered bench
personnel prior to the game and
during intermissions. (Indirect)
Committing an unsportsmanlike foul:
(Head coach-direct, bench indirect)

a. Disrespectfully addressing an
official.
b. Attempting to influence an official’s
decision.
c. Using profane or inappropriate
language.
d. Objecting to an official’s decision by
inappropriate gestures.
COACH TECHNICALS CONT’D
f. Inciting undesirable crowd reactions.
g. Squad members not remaining
seated other than reacting to an
outstanding play. (Indirect)
NOTE – The second direct technical
on any coach, player or bench
personnel results in disqualification.
(Players are ejected to the bench and
adult personnel are directed to the locker
room or out of the gym. (One flagrant)
COACH TECHNICALS CONT’D
The second direct technical on anyone is
always considered flagrant.
The third indirect foul on a coach results in
ejection. (Locker room or out of the gym)
If the coach refuses to leave, the game
shall be forfeited.
A combination of three technicals on a
coach also results in ejection. (Two
indirects and one direct)
