Tournament Notes
What’s in a name?
Formally Rider College until the early 1990s, the school is now called Rider University.
The team nickname is the Broncs and not the Broncos.
We are the Rider University Broncs.
De Ja Vu – Twice is Nice
When your team goes undefeated in conference play and wins the regular season title for
the second time in a row, things are bound to happen in the hardware department. For the
second year in a row, Rider won two of the major Northeast Conference awards with
Virginia Egusquiza repeating as NEC Player of the Year and for the third year in a row, a
Rider freshman was the top rookie with Sandra Penas winning the NEC Rookie of the
Year award. Egusquiza, Penas, Megan Pisani (NEC Offensive Player of the Year) and
Lindsay Rajeski earned All-NEC First Team honors.
One for the Thumb
For the fifth time in Rider history and the second year in a row, the Broncs won the
Northeast Conference regular season title. Rider has won the crown in 2001, 2003, 2005,
2009 and 2010.
Nine Lives
Rider went undefeated (9-0) at home on its new turf field this season.
‘Home’r
Juniors Megan Pisani and Virginia Egusquiza had the opponents saying ‘da-oh’ scoring
12 of Rider’s 31 goals at home. The defense wasn’t too shabby either allowing only four
goals in the nine home games.
Pisani Clutch in Conference
Junior Megan Pisani had four game-winning goals in the six conference games that she
played and overall had eight goals and an assist in conference play this season.
Key against the Keystone State
Rider went 7-1 during the regular season against Pennsylvania based schools.
Streakers
Rider is current on a 13-game winning streak and the Broncs have won 16 straight NEC
regular season games, dating back to the 2008 season. The 13 wins in a row tie the Rider
record set by the 2009 team that started the season 13-0 enroute to a 17-2 record.
Inside the streak
Junior Virginia Egusquiza has been Rider’s leading scorer during the winning streak with
nine goals and 16 assists (34 points) with junior Megan Pisani scoring 10 goals (five
game-winners) to go along with three assists. Rider has out-scored its opponents 45-5
and junior goalie Rebecca Lotito has started all 13 games.
Speaking of Streaks
Junior Virginia Egusquiza has a point in 17 of the 19 games played this season.
Making a Point
Junior Virginia Egusquiza has a point in 31 of her last 38 games over the last two
seasons.
Looked easier than it was
Winning 16 of 19 games didn’t come without some trepidation. Rider is 3-3 in one-goal
games this season and the Broncs are 2-1 in overtime.
3x1
All of Rider’s losses this season (three) have been by one goal.
Come from ahead
In two of the three losses, Rider held a second half lead, at Hofstra and at Delaware.
4x4
Rider was awarded Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week honors four times during
the nine week regular season and also earned the NEC Player of the Week award four
times.
11th Heaven
Rider head coach Lori Hussong is in her 11th season at the helm of the field hockey team
and this is the 11th straight time that the Broncs qualified for the four-team NEC
playoffs. After exhaustive research, it was learned that Hussong’s number in high school
and college was, you guessed it, #11.
Coaches really do know everything
In the preseason NEC coaches’ poll, Rider was picked to win the league, followed by
Monmouth, Quinnipiac and Bryant. The coaches got all four playoff teams correct with
Bryant finishing third and Quinnipiac placing fourth in the 2010 regular season.
Rider’s Nine Was Fine
Not only have the Broncs made the NEC playoffs 11 straight seasons, Rider advanced to
the NEC Title Game for the ninth time in the last 11 seasons.
Nationally Known
Several Broncs continue to be listed among the national statistical leaders...through the
NEC tournament, junior goalie Rebecca Lotito leads the nation in goals against average
and is fourth in save percentage, junior Virginia Egusquiza is fourth in assists and 12th
in points per game, freshman Sandra Penas is 16th in points and 23rd in goals per game
(and second among all freshmen in goals) and junior Megan Pisani is 21st in goals and
34th in points per game.
All About the Team
In the latest national rankings, Rider is first in penalty corners and shutouts, third in goals
against average, fourth in winning percentage and sixth in goals, assists and points per
game.
Been There, Done That, Still Doing It
Rider has won the 2001, 2003, 2005, 2009 and now the 2010 NEC Regular Season Titles
with the Broncs winning the NEC Championship in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2010.
Speaking of Getting It Done
Rider head coach Lori Hussong is currently 11th among active Division I coaches with a
.688 winning percentage (150-68).
They can’t win if they can’t score
For the second year in a row, Rider allowed only one goal in regular conference play with
junior Rebecca Lotito compiling a 0.15 g.a.a. in seven NEC games this season.
Zero Hero
As a team, Rider has 10 shutouts in 19 games and gave up only one goal in four of the
other nine games.
Lighting the Lamp
Rider is out-scoring its opponents 67-17 this season including 33-5 in the first half.
Silly Solly Fact of the Day
From the desk of Assistant SID Brian Solomon...Rider is 33-5 in its last 38 games (over
two seasons) for a winning percentage of (.868).
By Month
Rider was 1-0 in August, 5-3 in September, 8-0 in October and 2-0 in November this
season.
Day by Day
Rider is 6-1 in Sunday games, 1-0 on Monday, 2-0 on Wednesday, 0-1 in Thursday
games, 5-1 on Friday’s and 2-0 in Saturday games this season. The NCAA Play-In will
be Rider’s first Tuesday game of the season.
Saw one recruit, got a teammate as well
Rider has four sets of high school teammates on the 2010 roster, Gabby Burgo and Ellie
LaBar (sophomores from Collingswood High in New Jersey), senior Kristy Kelly and
junior Natasha Tukeva (Freedom High School in Pennsylvania), seniors Margaret Ecke
and Lindsay Rajeski (New Egypt High School in New Jersey) and sophomore Marlaine
Schneider and freshman Kristine Dougherty (Neshaminy High School in Pennsylvania).
‘Spain’-ing the Globe
Joining junior sensation Virginia Egusquiza (Getxo, Spain) this season on the Rider
roster was rookie Sandra Penas (Barcelona, Spain).
Strike one more goal off the list
Through the NEC tournament Rider has already set the team record for goals in a season
with 67. The old record was 62 goals set by the 2004 NEC champion and NCAA Play-In
team. The 1982 team also scored 62 times.
Lending a Helping Hand
Rider has already set a team record with 53 assists this season, besting the 45 assist mark
set by the 2004 and 1992 teams.
Good Point
The Broncs have already set a Rider record with 187 points (67 goals, 53 assists) passing
the 2004 team that had 169 points (62 goals, 45 assists).
We’ve got class
Rider has three seniors, five juniors, six sophomores and five freshmen on the 2010
roster.
You from Jersey? What exit?
10 of Rider’s 19 players are from New Jersey with six from neighboring Pennsylvania.
The Broncs have one player from New Hampshire and two from beyond the pond
(Spain).
STUDENT-Athlete
For five of the past seven semesters, the field hockey team has had the highest team grade
point average of Rider's 20 varsity teams. In 2008, of the 99 Rider student-athletes that
earned Conference All-Academic team honors, either in the NEC, the MAAC of the
CAA, 14 were from the field hockey squad and last season 12 players earned NEC
Scholar Athlete honors (3.20 g.p.a. or higher) with 11 earning NFHCA Academic honors
with a g.p.a. 3.30 or higher. For the last three years in a row, the team has earned
national recognition from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association for its team
grade point average over a 3.00.
A New Twist
The Northeast Conference and snack (and pretzel) maker Snyder’s of Hanover are
partnering to sponsor the conference championship events.
Pretty in Pink
Against Siena, Rider teamed up with Susan G. Komen and as part of the Score for the
Cure effort, raised donations and awareness in the battle against breast cancer by wearing
pink warm up shirt pregame and pink shoe laces during the contest. Thanks to the
generosity of the Bronc fans and community, several hundred dollars was raised.

NEC Field Hockey summary (courtesy of northeastconference.org)
In 1998, field hockey became the 21st sport sponsored by the Northeast Conference. The
nine member league was comprised of NEC members Monmouth, Quinnipiac, Robert
Morris, Sacred Heart and St. Francis (PA); and associate members Fairfield, Lock Haven,
Rider and Siena. Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart shared the first title in 1998. In 1999, the
first postseason championship game was contested with regular season champion
Quinnipiac stopping Monmouth, 1-0. Rider came from the #4 seed to defeat Quinnipiac
in the title game and win the 2000 tournament. The Bobcats turned the tables on Rider in
2001, edging the Broncs, 1-0, to capture their second championship in three years. Rider
returned the favor in 2002, knocking off Quinnipiac for its second league crown. Rider
and Quinnipiac met for the fourth straight season in the 2003 championship game, with
the Bobcats scoring a 2-1 win over the top-seeded Broncs in the title match to win their
third NEC championship. Lock Haven joined the conference as an associate member in
2004 and though ineligible for postseason play, went on to win the regular season
championship. Rider edged Fairfield for the 2004 NEC Tournament title, its third in five
years. Sacred Heart took home its first NEC crown in 2005 with a 1-0 win over Rider.
Competing in its first NEC Tournament in 2006, Lock Haven came away with the title
with a 1-0 triumph over Sacred Heart. Lock Haven repeated in 2007 with a 3-1 win over
Rider and made it three straight with a 3-0 conquest of the Broncs in 2008. Following the
2007 season, Lock Haven's Blair Wynne was named a second team Longstreth/NFHCA
Division I All- American, while Saint Francis (PA)'s Erin Reifsteck was tabbed a third
team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. Last season Rider went undefeated
in conference play to win the regular season title before being upset in the semifinals by
Monmouth in overtime. Lock Haven won its fourth and final tournament title in a row
before moving to the Atlantic 10. Rider again went undefeated in NEC play this season
and defeated Monmouth 1-0 in the 2010 Title Game.
The winner of today’s NCAA Play-In will receive an automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA
championship and will play on Saturday, November 13. The time, location and opponent
will be announced during the 2010 NCAA Field Hockey Tournament Selection Show on
Tuesday, November 9 at 8 p.m. The selection show will be streamed live on ncaa.com.
About the Northeast Conference
Now in its 30th year of service, the NEC’s new Strategic Plan has established a blueprint
for the future as the Conference strives toward becoming an NCAA Division I leader for
athletic success, academic achievement and integrity, sportsmanship, equity and
diversity, community partnership and national engagement. The Northeast Conference’s
commitment to academic excellence translated into national recognition for both
individual student-athletes and the league’s member institutions as a whole. NEC studentathletes graduated at an 84.7 percent rate, which is well above the national average of 79
percent according to NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) data. Likewise, a total of 19
NEC teams garnered public recognition from the NCAA for their latest Academic
Progress Rate (APR) scores. The league placed 33 representatives on ESPN The
Magazine Academic All-District teams, one of whom - Monmouth men’s soccer player
Daniel Bostock - went on to garner Academic All-America Honors. On a conferencewide level, more than 2,200 student-athletes qualified for the NEC Academic Honor Roll,
a 13 percent increase from the previous year, while nearly 500 were named to the
Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll with GPAs of 3.75 or higher.

Rider takes home Player, Offensive Player and Rookie of the Year Honors
Four Broncs - All-NEC First Team Honors
LAWRENCEVILLE--When your team goes undefeated in conference play for the
second year in a row a few conference wide accolades may be in order and for the Rider
University field hockey team Thursday night that was certainly the case.
For the second year in a row, junior Virginia Egusquiza (Getxo, Spain) was named the
Northeast Conference Player of the Year with junior Megan Pisani (Plainsboro/West
Windsor-Plainsboro North) earning NEC Offensive Player of the Year honors and
freshman Sandra Penas (Barcelona, Spain) earning NEC Rookie of the Year honors.
Egusquiza, a 5-4 midfielder/forward, had 10 goals and a Rider record 20 assists for the
Broncs.
Egusquiza, who was also the 2008 NEC Rookie of the Year, had points in 16 of Rider’s
17 games this season and enters the NEC tournament seventh on Rider’s all-time scoring
list with 96 points including a Rider record 42 career assists.
Egusquiza is currently fourth in Division I in assists and 11th averaging 2.35 points per
game.
This is the fifth time under head coach Lori Hussong that Rider has had an NEC Player of
the Year honoree.
Pisani, a 5-4 forward who was an All-NEC First Team honoree in 2009, played in 16
games while battling injuries and still led the Broncs with 15 goals, including five gamewinners.
Pisani is 12th in Division I in goals and 19th averaging 2.06 points per game and enters
the tournament 12th on Rider’s all-time scoring list.
Penas, a 5-6 forward who earned NEC Rookie of the Week honors twice, had 13 goals,
including three game-winners while adding six assists and became only the second field
hockey player in NEC history to earn both Player and Rookie of the Week honors in the
same week.
Penas is 16th in points in Division I and is the second leading scorer among all freshmen
and 18th overall in goals per game (0.87).
This is the third year in a row that Rider has been awarded NEC Rookie of the Year
honors with current sophomore Marlaine Schneider (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy)
winning in 2009 and current junior Virginia Egusquiza taking home the 2008 award.
Egusquiza, Pisani, Penas and senior defender Lindsay Rajeski (New Egypt) also earned
All-NEC First Team honors.
Rajeski, a 5-7 midfielder/back, was a Second Team All-NEC honoree as a junior and had
five goals while helping to anchor a defense that posted nine shutouts and is ranked third
in goals against average (0.87).
Riding an 11-game winning streak and at 14-3 overall and 7-0 in the Northeast
Conference, Rider will host the four-team playoffs beginning on Friday at 11am with
second seed Monmouth and third seed Bryant. The Broncs will play fourth seed
Quinnipiac at 1:30pm.
The championship game is Saturday at noon.
This is the 11th year in a row that Rider has qualified for the four-team NEC playoffs, all
under coach Hussong and the Broncs have advanced to the NEC Title game eight times
in the last 10 seasons, winning the championship in 2000, 2002 and 2004.

Ladies of Spain, we adore you. By Bud Focht – Rider Sports Information Director
November 6, 2010
Ladies of Spain, we adore you.
Even without the accordion music that usually accompanies those lyrics, that is still
exactly how the Rider community feels about junior Virginia Egusquiza and freshman
Sandra Penas of the Northeast Conference Champion Bronc varsity field hockey team.
Currently the top two scorers in the entire NEC, Virginia and Sandra both hail from The
Kingdom of Spain or Reino de España, Egusquiza from Getxo and Penas from
Barcelona, and the pair of Spaniards have led Rider to a 15-3 record, a perfect 7-0 in the
NEC regular season, and to a fifth NEC Regular season title in the last 10 years. Rider
will play in its fourth NCAA Play-In this Tuesday.
"Virginia has helped raise our level of play in her short time here with us," said Rider
head coach Lori Hussong. "She is hardworking, yet humble and continues to be a huge
factor on the field for us. Without her presence our program would not be playing at the
level we are."
Egusquiza is the NEC Field Hockey Player of the Year for the second year in a row and
ranks fourth in the nation in assists with a Rider-record 22 and 10th in points per game.
As a freshman she was the 2008 NEC Rookie of the Year after deciding on Rider over
Syracuse. "I visited Syracuse, it was nice," Virginia said, "but I liked Rider so much
more. The coaches and the players."
Penas, the NEC Rookie of the Year, currently ranks 18th in Division I in goals, 16th in
points per game and is the leading freshman goal scorer in the nation. She has earned
NEC Rookie of the Week honors three times and was even presented with an NEC Player
of the Week award, a rare accomplishment for a freshman.
"Sandra is really starting to get acclimated to our style of game in the United States,"
Hussong said. "The more experience that she gets, the better she will be. She is
definitely a great scorer."
The first time Sandra set foot on American soil was when she visited Rider. "I love it
here," Penas said with her thick, Castilian Spanish accent. "The fact that Virginia was
here helped me make my decision to come here. We had friends in common in Spain and
I talked with her through the Internet. She told me about the University and the team and
the coaches, how it was like a small family."
Having Egusquiza here, at the very least, gave Penas someone to talk to. "We never
speak English at home," Sandra said. "No one does," Virginia added.
"I like having Sandra here," Virginia said. "She's a great player but I also like having her
off the field. It is nice to talk in Spanish sometimes. Sometimes we talk in English
because we don't want to be rude in front of the girls, but when we are alone we speak
Spanish."
Fictional baseball manager Jimmy Dugan once explained to a player who thought
professional baseball was too hard that, "It is supposed to be hard. The hard is what
makes it great! If it wasn't hard, everybody would do it." Egusquiza feels the same way
about living in a foreign land.
"The best thing about being here is being able to go to school and play field hockey,"
Virginia said. "Back home the universities don't have teams, so I would play on a club
team separate from school. The hardest part of being here is trying to play field hockey
and keep up with my school work. They take up a lot of time. I spend a lot of time
studying, getting a great education. It is hard, doing it in a second language, but I really
like it."
Following the death of Dictator Francisco Franco in 1975, rapid economic modernization
(Spain joined the European Union in 1986) gave Spain a dynamic and rapidly growing
economy and made it a global champion of freedom and human rights. "I don't like
Franco," Sandra said.
Like her countrymen in the mid-1970s after Franco, Penas does like her independence.
"The biggest difference so far in living here compared to home is that at home my parents
are always helping me," Penas said. "Here I am by myself, making my own choices, my
own decisions. That is good and bad so far, but I like it."
An outstanding athlete, Penas is an accomplished skier, tennis player and sailor, but
prefers field hockey. "Field hockey is a team sport," Sandra said. "It gives you something
the individual sports cannot. Here you live with your teammates and share experiences
with them. That is better."
"I like field hockey best because it is a group sport," Virginia said. "You learn how to live
with people and deal with problems."
Both are Business majors (Sandra-Economics, Virginia-International Business) who hope
to earn their degrees and return to Spain to use them. "We have our families there,"
Virginia said, "but I think I would like to work with an American company there."
Spain is known for exporting cars and wine, but Virginia and Sandra may be the best
things that have come to the U.S. from there since Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas.
Or maybe Pablo Picasso. Like Picasso, Virginia and Sandra can perform works of art
with a piece of wood in their hands.
Just not to accordion music.
