ABOUT THE HORNETS YOUTH SLED HOCKEY TEAM
Started eight years ago by JJ O’Connor, a former hockey player who sustained a
catastrophic injury in a hockey game, The Hornets provide an opportunity, at no cost, for
any youngster 20 years old or younger with a physical disability to participate in the great
sport of ice hockey.
The Hornets are funded 100% through donations from organizations such as Blackhawk
Charities, St. Laurence High School Hockey Club, and individuals LIKE YOU!
For more information, or to donate, contact JJ O’Connor, Chair, USA Disabled Hockey
Section at [email protected].
Dear Hockey People,
Hockey Makes A Difference! Hockey is also undeniably the best team sport ever
invented. You are receiving this request because you get it - you get hockey and all
the life lessons that it can bring to kids of all ages. This being said, I have had the
privilege & opportunity the last eight years to work with the HORNETS YOUTH
SLED HOCKEY TEAM with another year and a half before that in the planning stages.
The Hornets Sled Hockey Team consists of a great group of kids ages 5 to 20 whom
have physical disabilities, yet are determined to play ice hockey. As almost all children
do, they want the opportunity to participate in sports, to feel the camaraderie of being
part of a team. In some cases itʼs not even to play hockey - for some, it is their only
freedom outside a wheelchair or walker.
The Hornet Program is completely free to our players. The families of the Hornets
have had to endure near catastrophic medical expenses for their children. It is our
attempt to keep this program free of charge for all of these great kids.
Our program is fully funded by donations and 100% of the money collected goes
directly to equipment and ice time.
As the General Manager of the Hornets, I am trying to raise funds to help defray our
costs to the players through a direct effort to people like you, HOCKEY LOVING
PEOPLE!
While I know that times are tough for everyone, any size donation will mean more
to this team than you can possibly imagine. If you could give up just one hot dog
and coke this season and donate that amount to the Hornets, it would make a huge
difference in the lives of these kids.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and the Hornets will be very grateful for
any monetary donation you can provide.
Sincerely,
JJ OʼConnor
General Manager
Hornets Youth Sled Hockey Team

Hornets bring their sting to the Flyers!
Grinding, fast paced ice sled hockey excitement is set for Sunday, December 22,
2013 at 7:25pm at the Skatium Ice Arena, where the Skokie Flyer’s Hockey team
will host the Hornets Youth Sled Ice Hockey Team for a Benefit Game.
“What’s it all about?”
The annual rematch pits the Skokie Flyers against the Hornets Youth Sled
Hockey Team filling the main rink with the fast passing and hard hitting action
of sled hockey. Each year the Flyers host the Hornets and each year has
provided tons of hockey fun and excitement.
“What makes a Sled(ge) player?”
It’s all in the equipment. Tricked out in specially designed sleds players fly
across the ice moving, passing and shooting using two carbon fiber (image being
able to use two hockey sticks!).
All about the Hornets
The Hornet’s Hockey Program is fully funded by donations with 100% of the
donations going to support its players so that they may play hockey for free!
Made up of players ranging in age from 5 to 20, who won’t let a physical
disability to stop them from being players and from playing the sport they love.
For more information or to contribute to help the Hornets to continue to do
their great job of outfitting their players, contact JJ O’Connor, Chair, USA
Disabled Hockey Section at [email protected].
So come on and join in! Support your fellow hockey players and skate over to
the Skatium to see an exciting version of hockey that is the favorite of the
Paralympics Games, especially if you know someone that needs to see, with
their own eyes, that Hockey IS For Everyone!
