February 24, 2016 Dear Jr. Badminton Players and Parents, Junior Badminton practices started on Thursday, February 25th, 2016. Practices will be every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:00. There will be no practices on the following dates: March 24, 29, 31 (Easter) , April 12 (Student-led conferences), April 14 (no school – day in lieu of student-led conferences), April 21 (Senior Badminton sectionals). We will let the students know if for some reason we have to cancel a practice other than those listed above. A reminder for everyone that all players must wear protective eye wear (even singles players!) So if you want to bring your own goggles, make sure they are at every practice. We will host sub/ sectional playoffs on Saturday, April 30. Parents will be contacted to help organize the booth closer to the date. This will include working, preparing food, and cleaning up. We appreciate your help. We hope to attend at least one tournament and have some exhibition games after schools. We’ll contact you as early as possible to let you know our plans and ask for your assistance in transporting the players. Your help is greatly appreciated. Anyone who advances from sectionals will go to Districts on May 7, 2015 in Swift Current. . Appropriate Dress for Sectionals and Districts is required. 1) All competitors must dress in predominantly white uniform or in a school uniform that reflects school colours (large pictures on the front or back of white t-shirts is not acceptable. Popular “board” shorts are also not considered part of any school uniform). Doubles teams must be uniform in their dress – both tops and shorts (shorts may be school colors or black/navy). Therefore make sure your son or daughter has a pair of appropriate black shorts. We will use volleyball uniforms for our t-shirts. 2) Players may not wear headgear other than sweatbands. The headbands are to be narrow – not bandanas wrapped around their head. 3) No jewelry allowed. 4) Anyone interested in playing Jr. Badminton, be ready to practice every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:00 with your racquet, shorts, runners and eye protection (we will have extra goggles at the school that you may use if you don’t have your own). If you have any questions, please let us know. 5) At both sub/sectional and district level a round robin pool format will be used. In sub/sectional play, there will only be pool play. No playoffs. At districts, the two top from each pool will cross over (A1 vs B2, A2 vs B1) in the semifinal. The two winners will advance to the final. 6) Badminton is considered a “gentleman’s game”. There are no referees. Keep the following points in mind: a) No arguing. b) You cannot ask for help from spectators or coaches for line calls. c) You can ask your opponent for help with a call. d) If neither can tell – “let” point – reserve. e) If there is a problem with an illegal serve, please point it out and re-serve. Ask for clarification from the score table. Serve must be contacted below the waist. You cannot fake a serve. An attempt to serve is considered a serve. f) Bad language or inappropriate actions will not be tolerated. This includes racquet abuse. g) Call your score on every serve. h) Both teams need to go to scorer’s table at the completion of the match to record score. In round robin format, scores of each game can be very important to break ties – both teams should check the score sheet carefully. We are looking forward to a great badminton season. If you have any questions feel free to contact either of us. Suzanne Oldhaver and Karen Smith
