WORKSHOPDESCRIPTION:
Researchhasdemonstratedthatsecurelyattachedtherapistshavethebestpatientoutcomes,and
changeinattachmentstatusisapositivetherapeuticoutcome.Inthisworkshop,Dr.LisaFirestone
willdrawuponthelatestneurobiologicalresearch,attachmenttheoryandclinicalexperienceto
guideyouthroughtheprocessofcreatingacoherentnarrativeforyourselfandyourclients.This
processcanhelpyouandyourclientsresolveoldtraumas,bigandsmall,sothattheynolonger
intrudeonthepresent.Whenapersoncreatesacoherentnarrative,theyactuallyrewirethebrain
tocultivatesecuritywithinthemselvesandtheirrelationships.
SparkedbyBowlby’soriginalinsights,attachmentresearchhasrevolutionizedourunderstandingof
humandevelopment,theinternalworld,andtheconsequencesofdevelopmentgoneawry.Noother
empirically-basedtheorytellsusmoreabouthowwebecomewhoweare–andhowtochangewho
wehavebecome.
Researchdemonstratesthatatherapistsattachmentstyleispredictiveofclientoutcomesandthose
therapistswithsecureattachmenthavebetteroutcomes.Manypsychotherapyoutcomeresearch
studiesareusingchangeinattachmentstatus,toearnedsecureattachment,asameasureof
successfulpsychotherapy.Inaddition,whatcouldbemoreimportantforyouandyourclientsthan
understandingthepastandhowitshapeswhoyouare?Wecarryarounddeepwounds,behaviors
andbeliefsaboutothersandourselvesfromourearliestattachments,whichunconsciouslydirect
ourlives.

recreatingit,essentiallyre-experiencingoldhurtsoverandoveragain.Attachmentresearch
demonstratesthatmakingsenseofthepastisthebestpredictorofyourabilitytoshapeyourfuture.
Theworkshopwillprovidethetoolsforyoutodigdeepandresolveoldtraumas,bigandsmall,so
thattheynolongerhauntyouandstrategiestoapplythesetoolswithyourclients.Thisworkshopwill
drawuponthelatestattachmentresearchandoutlinetheprocessofwritingacoherentnarrative.
Researchinneurobiologyshowsthatwhenapersonwritesacoherentnarrative,theyactuallyrewire
theirbraintofeelmoresecurewithinthemselvesandtheirrelationships.Inaddition,creatinga
coherentnarrativecontributestodevelopingearnedsecureattachment.Throughguidedwriting
exercisesandexperientialactivities,youwillgettoknowyourselfbetterandgainvaluableinsight.
Additionally,thisworkshopwillprovideyouwithtoolstohelpclientsintegratetheiremotions,heal
insecureattachment,andflourishinalltheirrelationships.Thisworkshopwillprovideyouwiththe
toolstohelpclientshavebetterrelationshipswiththeirchildrenandromanticpartners.
Afterattendingthisworkshopparticipantswillbeableto:
1. Demonstratehowchildattachmentpatternscontinuetoaffectpeoplethroughouttheirlives.
2. Describe,usingcuttingedgeneurobiologicalresearch,howclientscanrewiretheirbrainsto
feel
moresecure.
3. Explainhowapatient,throughtheprocessofpsychotherapy,candevelopanearnedsecure
attachmentinadulthood.
4. Applystepbystepguidelinesforhowtohelpclientsdevelopacoherentnarrativefortheir
life.
5. Applytechniquestohelpclientsbetterunderstandandintegratetheiremotions.
6. Discussaframeworkforhelpingclientsresolvechildhoodtraumas.
