Boyertown YMCA Students Win First Prize at 2017 UnitedHealthcare Health Bee Competition PHILADELPHIA, P.A. (May 12, 2017) – Students from Boyertown YMCA won the 2017 UnitedHealthcare Health Bee competition last night in a spirited final round in Limerick, earning the branch a grand prize of $1,000 for its health and wellness youth programs. Diva Richards, a personal fitness trainer and Crossfit coach, moderated. Students from YMCA branches Audubon, Pottstown, Phoenixville, Spring Valley and Upper Perk also competed in the quiz show-style competition designed to get middle-school students excited to learn about health, fitness and nutrition. UnitedHealthcare and the Spring Valley YMCA hosted the competition yesterday at the Spring Valley YMCA branch. Dan Tropeano, CEO of UnitedHealthcare of Pennsylvania, kicked off the program by talking about the importance of adopting healthy habits at a young age. “Pre-teens are at a critical juncture in their development when they begin to make their own choices about how often to exercise and what to feed their bodies,” said Tropeano. “The UnitedHealthcare Health Bee educates students about their health in a way that’s fun and engaging. By helping kids understand how their choices affect the way their body works and feels, we help set them on a healthy path to adulthood.” UnitedHealthcare awarded Upper Perkiomen Valley YMCA second place and a $500 prize, and Phoenixville YMCA won third place and a $250 prize. This is the 3rd year of the Philadelphia UnitedHealthcare Health Bee competition in partnership with the Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA. “The UnitedHealthcare Health Bee lets students celebrate their knowledge of health and wellness and gives them a head start on the path toward healthy living into adulthood,” said Mary Frances Reilly, executive director, diversity, inclusion, global engagement and community, YMCA. “Linking the UnitedHealthcare Health Bee competition to YMCA youth programs adds a collaborative component, which fosters greater participation and team-building skills among the students.” UnitedHealthcare serves more than 1 million people in Pennsylvania, with a network of more than 55,000 providers.
