The recent bush fires that have wreaked havoc in our districts, has been nothing short of devastating.
The bureau of meteorology had predicted that the weekend of the 11th and 12th of February 2017 would
bring catastrophic scenes…and for once it was right. The temperatures were hot, extremely bloody hotin most areas it was well and truly over 46c and the winds that came with this heat wave were strong.
Combine these two together, and you have a catastrophic weather event, one that brings fire, and which
destroys everything in its path.
That dreaded weekend saw in the St Ivan Fire, 35 homes destroyed, 11 homes damaged, 1 church
destroyed, 1 community hall destroyed, 131 outbuildings destroyed and 42 damaged, burning out an
estimated 60,000 Ha. In Boggabri one home was destroyed with 2 outbuildings destroyed.
The St Ivan fire not only destroyed the above homes and buildings, it also destroyed in its path,
approximately $2 Million dollars’ worth in sheep and cattle. Countless family pets also perished.
Families have been left with nothing but the clothes on their backs, children are without
toys, dads and pops are left without their work utes, tools and tractors, mummies are
tears of their children and have to explain to them why their beloved pet cat or puppy
home tonight. Husbands and wives are left without their marriage photos, or photos
children were born; all their precious items have been burnt to the ground.

To try and put these families back on their feet we are aiming to fundraise $50,000 at the ‘Bushfire
Charity Ball’. We are also wanting to donate part of these proceeds to the Gunnedah RFS Unit which
over the summer period its members and volunteers also tirelessly put their lives on the line to save
homes and properties. It is anticipated that over 300 people will be attending the function, and we will
be drawing on people from all of the surrounding communities, such as Boggabri, Narrabri, Tamworth,
Quirindi, Werris Creek and beyond. With fabulous local catering (from The Verdict) those attending will
have a truly delicious food experience in the beautiful town hall.
The social aspect of the event will be just as important for the community morale as it is for our
fundraising requirements. We acknowledge that this is a significant target, and would like to think that
this is achievable when local businesses back the communities that support them. When a small
community like Gunnedah gets together, amazing things can happen. Our partners are crucial to the
success of the ‘Bush Fire Charity Ball’. Sponsorship packages are designed to maximize company
brand exposure both in the lead up to and during the evening of the Ball. We will also be exposing each
of your individual businesses on the Ball’s facebook page, outling what your business does.
