Words Their Way
■
■
Maintains the same leveled list for about 6-7
school days
The progress indicators are a reflection of
class work, homework, and the students’
ability to master the words on a basic list as
well as their ability to apply the correct
spelling pattern of these words in their
writing.
Reader’s Workshop
This program gives students tools and strategies
for selecting and comprehending literature.
It emphasizes the interaction between readers and
text. Students learn to ask questions and make
connections.
Reader’s Workshop involves students in authentic
reading experiences that focus on the strengths
and needs of each student and allows opportunity
for differentiated instruction.
Writer’s Workshop
(Personal Narrative, Information, Opinion)
•Mini-lesson: teach a writing skill or strategy
•Independent Writing: time for students to
write and practice the skill from the minilesson
•Conferring/Small Groups: observe, coach,
and instruct individuals or groups of students
•Share: this is where students share their
writing with the class.

HOMEWORK
• Homework will be written in their planners daily
and is due the following day.
• It will be assigned Monday - Thursday.
• Please sign the planners daily as part of the
homework. We try to always list upcoming
events or tests in the planners, so always check
them.
• Students earn stickers on a HW chart every night
that their homework is completed. Once the
chart is filled, students will receive a “No
Homework” pass.
Behavior
• During the first week of school, we discussed
the importance of rules. We explained that
we have rewards and consequences for our
actions.
• We expect all of the students to follow the
classroom rules each day.
• In addition, we have a ticket system that helps
students stay aware of their daily choices.
