National Latino Farmers and Ranchers Trade Association Please join us for The Seeds of Rural Resilience: A Summit on Community Food Sovereignty and Regenerative Agriculture Friday and Saturday, May 12-13, 2017 – Atrisco, NM Preconference Workshop on Rural and Food System Resilience with USDA Rural Development - Thurs. May 11 afternoon in Atrisco We invite all Rural Coalition farmers, ranchers, and farmworkers; and our agency partners, allies and friends working towards organic and sustainable agriculture, grazing, forestry and fisheries to join us for Seeds of Rural Resilience Summit, hosted by the Town of Atrisco Land Grant, a traditional, self-governing farm and ranch community. We will focus on how the culture of the acequias (community irrigation systems) and other models of historical and traditional knowledge, and patterns of land use, land tenure and decision-making, relate to or could inform public food, farm, fishery and rural policies and programs to secure enduring and community-driven results. We will also review how holistic models emerging in rural communities around regenerative agriculture, community food sovereignty and rural resilience intersect with current policy conversations around soil health, agroecology and sustainable grazing. How do these approaches address critical issues such as equity, and land and labor rights and what potential do they have to address such challenges such as climate change, invasive species, food safety, and soil and pollinator health? Our summit will emphasize innovation, collaboration, and intergenerational knowledge transfer. We hope to emerge with a stronger holistic policy agenda to expand regenerative agriculture and revive resilience in local, national, and wider food systems. Participants will join the local community for a screening of the film, Las Acequias--The Life-Blood of New Mexico. The foundation of this work is strong local, regional and national organizations that work to assure the representation and involvement of every sector of this diverse fabric of rural peoples. The National Latino Farmers & Ranchers Trade Association organizes farmers, ranchers and farmworkers; plus provides policy, advocacy and technical assistance to assist them in their operations. 4 Principles and Goals of the Rural Coalition/ Coalición Rural The Rural Coalition’s charter members, some 22 national organizations, first joined together in 1978 to bring their combined experiences and skills to bear on national policies affecting rural people and communities. They mapped an ambitious course toward general goals articulated in the Rural Coalition’s guiding principles. These principles, to which all coalition member organizations subscribe, are: Justice and equal opportunity are the right of all people regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, or place of residence. All rural people are entitled to the good and services essential to a decent quality of life, including education, health and employment services, housing and basic community facilities. They are also entitled to democratic community institutions dedicated to serving their interests. The long-term viability of rural communities rests on effective control and use of resources by the people living in rural areas, including family farmers, local business people and working people of all walks of life. Community-based organizations are instrumental in the development of rural communities. Public policy should encourage their growth and strength. The federal government has the responsibility to ensure the rights of all citizens and to help secure the fulfillment of these rights. Consistent with its commitment to these guiding principles, the Rural Coalition has worked toward two long-range goals: The development and implementation of progressive policies responsive to rural needs; and The development of the capacities of rural organizations and people to work effectively for, and to sustain, institutional and systematic change. We join together as rural interest organizations to work for a better national and global society. 5 Time to Eliminate Rural Poverty Children? The Rural Coalition/Coalición Rural is an alliance of farmers, farmworkers, indigenous, migrant, and working people from the United States, Mexico, Canada, and beyond working together toward a new society that values unity, hope, people, and land. Since 1978, the work of the Rural Coalition is carried out and achieved by our member groups. Operating with minimal staff, our Coalition facilitates and assists our grassroots community members to work in unity to meet the collaborative goals and needs of its member groups.
