How to use this form?
-
Why should I use this form if I have a PhD Portfolio?
The PhD Portfolio isn’t fully operational yet; we’re still testing the data transfer from PURE to
the PhD Portfolio for example. It will be possible to apply for the Certificate or Attestation
through the PhD Portfolio when it’s completely operational, but until then we’re ought to use
this form.
-
When should I apply?
You can only apply once. After the end of the academic year you were last enrolled in, you
still have 3 months to submit your application (deadline 15th of December): e.g. you defended
your PhD in 2015-2016, so you have time until 15th of December 2016 to hand in the
application. If you want to obtain the Certificate, you can only apply after your public defence.
-
Certificate or Attestation?
In order to receive the Certificate of the Doctoral Training Programme, you will have to obtain
a minimum of 30 credits for activities. The other 30 credits are earned through the successful
defence of your doctoral dissertation (you can only apply after your public defence for the
Certificate). Apply for the Attestation when you haven’t completed the 60 credits of the
Doctoral Training Programme.
The Vrije Universiteit Brussel will only deliver 1 Certificate or Attestation per PhD student.
-
Credits?
In many cases the credits have been fixed beforehand, or are included on the documents that
you will need to add as proof: this is the case for most seminars or regular courses and for
most research activities (cf. ‘DS credit table for research attached to this form).
If the number of credits isn’t stipulated, we ask you to propose a number yourself. Please
keep these proposals reasonable: 1 credit/ approx. 24hrs of investment (preparation,
attendance, etc.). Your proposed credits will have to be approved by your Doctoral School
Director after you have submitted this form, and may be altered.
-
Should I add proof for all activities?
No, in case the evidence was uploaded and validated in the PhD Portfolio, you can refer to
the PhD Portfolio. We don’t need additional proof for research activities that were already
validated in PURE neither. We only need additional proof for:
o Regular courses, seminars that aren’t mentioned in the PhD Portfolio (proof of
participation, point sheet, mail from the instructor…)
o Educational activities (credit table, type 25-27): cover of the MA thesis, confirmation
from the course titular…
o Other research activities (credit table, type 17-24): depends on the type of activity.
Activities of type 1-16 (cf. credit table) that haven’t been added to the PURE database will
not be taken into consideration. Please do not mention them on this form.
