A. J. LIEBLINO,
STAN MACGOVERN,
It is my pleasure to inform you on behalt of the Newspaper Guild of
New York that a special jury of Guild members has voted to you the
Guild's annual Page One award in literature. The jury specitically
cited your novel, "Cry, the Beloved Country" which the jury found to
be a work of rare greatness.
The Guild is the trade union of working journalists. It makes Page
One awards annually in several fields, and the awards consist ot a
stick of bronze type mounted and boxed, carrying a citation in explanation of why it was made and a record ot the dete and place of
presentation.
The awards are customarily presented at the Guild's annual Page One
ball, to be held this year on Friday, May 20, at the Botel Commodore.
There will be 2,000 New York newspaper men and women present.
I do not know that you have any plans to be in this country around
that time, and will regret it if you have not, for I know there is no
literary figure held by many of us in higher esteem. If you do plan
to be in this country, I hope you will be able to come to the ball to
receive the award in person; if you do not, is there any person whom
you would desire to receive it in your behalf1
For your information, I am enclosing a complete list of the awards, as
well as the names of the jurors who made them. My congratulations to
you--and even more to the Newspaper Guild for having chosen you for
this award. \J1th all best Wishes.
Sincerely,
MIlS. FRANKLIN D. ROOSRVELT
