Dear Parents and Staff
As we move into March please take particular note of the following:
1. Safety and Security - Main Entrance Gate
After consulting with the operations staff, we have agreed that the main entrance to the school (near
Aftercare) will be locked just after the start of school which is 08h00 every morning, and only opened again
as each plane leaves. The main reason for this is safety. Because the gate opens directly onto a road, it is
unsafe to keep it open and unmanned while there are children nearby. This should not impact on you
significantly as the office gate will remain open – our front-of-house looks directly onto the pathway so we
are able to man this gate more effectively. This will take effect as of Wednesday 1 March 2017.
In addition, please ensure your children are at school on time as we have noticed that many students arrive
as late as 08h30. This has a serious impact on the first work cycle as it disrupts the children. Please also be
reminded that parents or family are not, under any circumstances, allowed into the classrooms during the
work cycles. Please come to the office if you have an emergency and we will take it from there.
2. Policy on Afternoon Pick-Up
It has come to your attention that many of the older children wait in the parking lot for their parents to pick
them up. We have created a waiting area in the front of the offices at the office gate where older students
can now wait for their parents rather than in the parking lot. Please inform your children that students from
Upper Elementary onwards, who do not go to aftercare once the day's activities are over at 15h15, must wait
in this new waiting area and not in the parking lot. However, please understand that this does not replace
Aftercare and is envisaged as a safe place where older students may wait for 15-20 minutes for a parent or
guardian to pick them up.
3. Class Activities this Week

Our Elementary children will be enjoying a visit from Bjorn Unger of Reptile Pets on Wednesday 1 March.

4. Lost Property
On Friday last week, we placed all the lost property out on the grass above Aftercare. Many items were
claimed - many were not. This week we will donate any unclaimed clothing and shoes to a community school
who can make good use of the clothing.
Moving forward - lost or misplaced items will be collected by the Pre-Primary and other classes and brought
to the office each week. Either check with your class or the office should you be looking for something. We
will place all items outside for viewing once per term, as we did last week, and then give the remaining items
to a needy cause.
Once again, we appeal to parents to make every effort to mark clothing items like jackets, jerseys, hoodies,
raincoats, shoes, hats - particularly as mornings get cooler but the days are still warm and children discard
layers.
6. Changes in the Calendar
Please take note of the following amendments to the calendar:
•
Music evening/braai scheduled for Friday 3 March has been cancelled
•
Our ever popular Sports Day has been moved from 30 March to Friday 21 April in the 2nd term
7. General (but still important)...
•
As per the calendar, kindly take note of the Public holiday in March, the day preceding which is also a
school holiday. Aftercare will also not be open on those days. Please make necessary arrangements
for your child/ren should they use the Aftercare facility.
•
Please ensure that your child/ren has/have the correct gear for their particular extramural activity
each day. Trail running, for example, requires that the children have appropriate footwear; fitness on
the polo field means that they should wear sun hats; and so on. In some cases, where children do
not have the right gear, they will be unable to participate in their activity that day. Kindly check with
your class Directress/Director if you are unclear about what they need.
•
Personal belongings should not be brought to school. Not only are they a distraction in the class
environment, but if they are lost, misplaced or inadvertently left behind at the end of the day, the
school cannot take responsibility for these items.
•
Kindly support our Facebook page and website. We endeavour to post items of interest, articles,
pictures of school events, occupations and more on our FB page each week. Kindly also visit the new
website www.newberryhouse.com for updates to the calendar and other interesting information.
•
Tuesday 25 April, early in the 2nd term, has been set aside as a possible date for Ann-Mari von
Bergmann, an audiologist, to visit the school to perform Hearing Screening tests at a cost of R 50.00

attached and return to your child's Directress/Director or the office before the end of term. AnnMari can only do this at the school should there be sufficient interest.
