Lucy Daniels Center
Message from the Leadership
Dear Friend of Lucy Daniels Center,
Children come to us with many kinds of problems. Sometimes they
are sad or anxious. Some have difficulties in their relationships.
Others have difficulties in their behavior. There is a long list of the
range of reasons that parents seek our guidance. Our hearts break
each time that we hear parents agonize about their child’s future or
about the difficulties in the relationship they have with their child.
There are times when we can help get the child back on track by providing a brief period of help. More often, we must provide sustained
assistance to enable the child to be emotionally capable of enjoying a
full and meaningful life. Addressing the immediate needs of the child
and family, while strengthening the child’s capacity for future growth
and independence, is a complex and often long-term endeavor.
We live this sustained commitment and dedication to the long-term
emotional well-being of each child under our care. It is a privilege
to be able to provide this level of dedication. We thank you for your
support and belief in our work for children and families of our region.
Yours,
Donald Rosenblitt, M.D., FABP
Clinical/Executive Director

2014–15 Annual Report
A LOOK BACK
(Sept. 1, 2014-Aug. 31, 2015)
Lucy Daniels Center
•
The Lucy Daniels School (LDS) was expanded to include elementary age classrooms in
order to meet community needs.
•
Work continued in 2014 on the Therapeutic Teaching Garden, designed to offer a
growing space for fruit, vegetables, and flowers and encourage outdoor activity and
peer collaboration among students. During 2014 and 2015, a greenhouse was built
and plantings expanded with help from the Whole Kids Foundation and Bayer Corp.
•
LDC completed a three-year John Rex Endowment sponsored SEED project in which
we provided intensive mentoring for 72 childcare facilities across Wake County.
•
Sculptor Paris Alexander began working with LDS in 2014 thanks to a grant from
Cary Visual Arts Guild. He led the students in making ceramic tiles that were a colorful
addition to the school.
•
The Lucy Daniels Center (LDC) began the Lucy’s Link program, which offered free
assessments of children’s mental health needs to childcare centers and preschools
in the Triangle.
•
Free books on child-appropriate emotional and mental health topics were distributed
to 21 sites via the Lucy’s Book Club program. This work was supported by grants from
Golden Corral, PNC Foundation, the Caterpillar Foundation, Duke Medicine, Target, and
Duke Energy.
•
A successful Heart Balm Ball sponsored by the Wake Family Law Group was held on
February 14, 2015 and generated almost $50,000 in funds for the Lucy Daniels Center.
•
The 2014 Expressions gala celebrating food and art was held on November 14, 2014 at
The Umstead Hotel & Spa in Cary. Chefs were The Umstead’s Steven Devereaux Greene;
Vivian Howard of Chef & The Farmer in Kinston, North Carolina; Kelly Fields of New
Orleans; Kim Floresca of Chapel Hill; and Evan Sheridan of The Umstead. The featured
artist was the Paperhand Puppet Intervention Company.
•
Family Guidance Service (FGS) served approximately 375 families during 14–15. Among
the types of situations that our therapists helped children with were: depression and
anxiety, the impact of sexual and physical abuse, the aftereffects of overseas adoptions,
social isolation, and aggression and impulse problems.
•
SecurePath, LDC’s outreach program collaboration with Wake County SmartStart, served
approximately 75 families during 14–15 with programs in both English and Spanish. Most
of these were Medicaid-eligible families.
•
The second annual 5K Run/Walk for children’s mental health was held in spring 2015.
This event raised funds for LDC’s Family Support Fund, while providing a fun, fitnessoriented family outing for our families, volunteers, and corporate supporters.
