TASK 3 - thenewPE

TASK 3
Department of Kinesiology - Physical Education Lesson Plan Template
Name:
Lesson Topic: Underhand Throwing
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Class Size: 20
Class Length: 40 minutes
School Site:
Coop. Teacher:
PDE or NASPE Standard(s) (1.2 WCU Unit Standards) (Help):
10.5.3.A. Recognize and use basic movement skills and concepts:
- locomotor movements (e.g., run, leap, hop)
- non-locomotor movements (e.g., bend, stretch, twist)
- manipulative movements (e.g., throw, catch, kick)
- relationships (e.g., over, under, beside)
- combination movements (e.g., locomotor, non-locomotor, manipulative)
- space awareness (e.g., self-space, levels, pathways, directions)
- effort (e.g., speed, force)
Essential Content (Help):
Manipulative movements are recognizable and useful in daily life.
Objective (1.1 WCU Unit Integration of Learning Outcomes) (Help):
Students will be able to recognize and use the proper one-handed underhand throwing
technique by participating in four different activities.
Safety (Help):
Equipment Needed (1.8 WCU Unit Materials/Equipment) (Help):
- 15 poly spots
- 8 blown up balloons with balloon weights
- 1 rope
- 1 hula hoop
- 3 tic-tac-toe boards (homemade)
- 35 bean bags
- 15 small soft balls
Technology (if applicable) (1.9 WCU Unit Materials/Equipment) (Help):
The teacher will need a CD and CD player to do start and stop commands.
Critical Elements (Help):
Preparation
- face your target
- feet shoulder width apart
- hold the bean bag or ball in dominant (favorite) hand
Execution
- take one step forward with the opposite foot (i.e. if you throw with your right hand, step
with your left foot)
- swing the arm holding the bean bag or ball back (“tic” like a clock)
- swing that arm forward (“tock” like a clock)
- release the bean bag or ball towards target
Follow Through
- your favorite hand’s palm should be facing the ceiling
Assessment (1.7 WCU Unit Formative/Summative Assessment of Students P-12) (Help):
The students will complete an alternative assessment. See attached.
Warm-Up (Help):
The teacher will demonstrate the underhand throw at least 3 times. Then as a group, the
students will shadow the teacher doing the underhand throw at least 3 times. The teacher
should give the underhand throwing cues at this time.
Anticipatory Set (Help):
The teacher will describe and demonstrate the 3 stations: Swinging Hoop, Tic-Tack-Toe, and
Balloon Knockdown.
Content Development (1.4 WCU Unit Procedures), Swinging Hoop
Time Allotted: 8 minutes
Managerial Task (Help):
A hula hoop will be tied to a basketball net by a rope. There will be 5 poly spots lined up next to
each other, each approximately 3 big steps away from the hula hoop. Each poly spot will have 3
bean bags on top.
Informing Task (Help):
Introduce the standard 10.5.3.A. Explain the term “manipulative.” Provide examples of what
sports or activities include manipulative movements. Demonstrate the Swinging Hoop and show
how the underhand throw is included in the station. Remind the students to incorporate the cues
from the shadowing warm-up in order to increase the chance of making the bean bag through
the hula hoop. When the students approach the activity, they will choose a poly spot and pick up
its bean bags. When the music begins the students will be able to underhand throw the bean
bags through the hula hoop.
Extending Task (Help):
The hula hoop will be pushed side to side (like a pendulum) ever so slightly. The swinging hoop
will create a moving target and act as an exciting challenge.
Accommodation Task (1.5) (Help):
For a student who is having difficulties reaching the hula hoop, a poly spot could easily be
moved closer. For a student who makes every throw, a poly spot can easily be moved further
away for even more of a challenge. If it is the bean bags giving the students difficulty, or too
much ease, a bucket of other safe objects could be set aside to provide more options. In
addition, students are always welcome to receive help from peers if needed.
Content Development, Tic-Tack-Toe (Help)
Time Allotted: 8 minutes
Managerial Task (Help):
Poster board size tic-tack-toe boards (homemade) will be taped to the floor. Approximately 3
giant steps away from a board will be a poly spot. Each poly spot will have 3 bean bags of one
color and 3 bean bags of another color to differentiate X’s and O’s.
Informing Task (Help):
Reintroduce the standard 10.5.3.A. and the term “manipulative.” Demonstrate this partner game
of tic-tack-toe and show how the underhand throw is included in the station. Remind the
students to incorporate the cues from the shadowing warm-up in order to increase the chance of
making the bean bag onto the board. When the students approach the activity, they will choose
a partner, a poly spot and pick up its bean bags. The object is to underhand throw the bean
bags onto the board, in attempts to get 3 in a row before your partner. You can accomplish 3 in
a row either diagonally or horizontally. Only one person is to throw at a time. When the music
begins the students will be able to underhand throw the bean bags through onto the board.
Extending Task (Help):
Try to switch partners after each game. See how many people in your group you can tic-tacktoe with before the music stops.
Accommodation Task (1.5) (Help):
For a student who is having difficulties reaching the tic-tack-toe board, a poly spot could easily
be moved closer.
Content Development, Balloon Knockdown
Time Allotted: 8 minutes
Managerial Task (Help):
Between 8 and 10 blown up balloons should be clustered together. Each balloon should be at a
different height, and tied down with a balloon weight. To be creative, draw pictures or tasks on
the balloons. Approximately 3 to 5 giant steps away from the balloons will be 5 poly spots lined
next to one another. Each poly spot will have 3 soft balls.
Informing Task (Help):
Reintroduce the standard 10.5.3.A. and the term “manipulative.” Demonstrate the Balloon
Knockdown and show how the underhand throw is included in the station. Remind the students
to incorporate the cues from the shadowing warm-up in order to increase the chance of
“knocking down” the balloons. When the students approach the activity, they will choose a poly
spot and pick up its soft balls. The object is to underhand throw the balls at the balloons, in
attempts to “knock it down.” When the music begins the students will be able to underhand
throw the balls at the balloons.
Extending Task (Help):
The balloons should be different colors. To extend this task, each color could be an indicator for
the students to do a safe stationary skill at the poly spot. For example, if the student makes
contact with a blue balloon, that student could do his or her favorite dance move. A chart of
what each color means would be posted for reference.
Accommodation Task (1.5) (Help):
For a student who is having difficulties contacting the balloon, a poly spot could easily be moved
closer. For a student who makes consistent contact, a poly spot can easily be moved further
away for even more of a challenge. If it is the ball giving the students difficulty, or too much
ease, a bucket of other safe objects could be set aside to provide more options. In addition,
students are always welcome to receive help from peers if needed.
Lesson Closure (1.6 WCU Unit Closure) (Help):
Reiterate that the underhand throw is a manipulative skill used in everyday life. Review the
critical cues for the underhand throw by asking the students to help name the cues. Discuss
how practicing the underhand throw will help improvement. Continue to ask questions at this
time. What is a manipulative skill? What sports or activities involve the underhand throw? Which
station today helped best with the underhand throw? If I were to give out the alternative
assessment, I would hand it out after the lesson closure as an Exit Pass. To conclude, thank the
students for participating.
Reflection (2.1, 2.2 WCU Unit Reflection on Planning and Instruction) (Help):
