The median teacher salary in the district rose from $80,378 in 2014-15, to $94,135 in 2015-16, according to the 2016 Taxpayer Guide to icon education costs Education Spending released by the state Department of Education on Thursday. That ranks the district second behind Northern Valley Regional School District, which has a median salary of $95,418 this year. Atlantic City Education Association President Marcia Genova was surprised the increase was so large, but she said most of the teachers who lost their jobs in the reduction in force this year were in the first three steps of the salary guide and that could have affected the median. The district lost 73 elementary positions and 33 high school positions, including 32 tenured staff. Genova said there are a large number of retirements coming this year, with 29 filed so far, so that could lower the median salary next year, as those teachers are replaced by new teachers at the low end of the pay scale. Page 2 of 2 Other districts with large increases this year included Buena Regional, where the median teacher salary rose from $68,396 to $80.496. At the Atlantic County Special Services School, the median rose from $70,940 to $83,226. In Egg Harbor Township, the median rose from $59,829 to $65,142. In addition to Atlantic City, seven South Jersey school districts ranked in the top 25 districts in median teacher salaries. They are Margate, ranked sixth at $89,766; Ocean City, ranked ninth at $88,354; Stone Harbor, ranked 12th at $86,776; Mainland Regional, ranked 13th at $86,230; Brigantine, ranked 16th at $84,212, Atlantic County Special Services ranked 23rd; and Ventnor, ranked 25th at $82,196. Median salaries tend to be high in districts that have little teacher turnover, a comparatively high top salary, plus benefits such as longevity pay. Ocean City has been phasing out longevity pay, which awarded teachers as much as $8,000 a year in additional salary. Teachers hired after 2013 are no longer eligible for the longevity payment. On the lower end of the pay scale are many charter schools, which typically are newer and have younger staff. The median salary for most charter schools in Atlantic and Cumberland counties is between $44,000 and $47,000 this year. Other districts at the lower end of the scale include Atlantic County Institute of Technology, Tuckerton, West Cape May, Dennis Township and Lacey Township, which all have median teacher salaries of between $50,000 and $52,000.
