This surprisingly straightforward game has been featured in so many stories, films and fantasies. Yet all it boils down to is guessing the number where the ball will come to a stop... That may sound simple, but the excitement mounts as the ball rolls! The Origins of the Game The French mathematician Blaise Pascal is often credited with inventing roulette, but this is not true. It is thought to have originated in 17th century Italy. The German encyclopaedia, Meyers Lexikon, lists roulette as Italian roulette in around 1900. Roulette can probably trace its original roots back to the mediaeval Wheel of Fortune. Evolving Further Roulette reached France during the 18th century, where Louis XV tried in vain to ban it. In 1806, Napoleon Bonaparte restricted gambling to the gambling halls within the Palais Royal in Paris. It was also in France that the process developed into essentially what it is today: the croupier drops the ball against the direction in which the wheel is turning. Once he has declared “No more bets, please”, no more bets can be placed. The game is essentially exactly the same all around the world. Famous Attempts to ban the game may have contributed to making it so famous. From the Russian author Dostoyevsky, who was addicted to roulette and took it as the basis for his novel ‘The Gambler’, to cinematic works about the gambling wheel, roulette exerts a definite fascination. As the physicist Stephen Hawking puts it: “All the evidence shows that God was actually quite a gambler, and the universe is a great casino, where dice are thrown, and roulette wheels spin on every occasion.” 4 Important Terms A small Encyclopaedia of Luck The Playing Area The playing area, which is also called the tableau, usually consists of a cloth with yellow lines, as well as numbers, words and symbols. The terms are in French or English. The numbers from 0 - 36 are clearly arranged on the tableau. The Cylinder The heart of the table is the Roulette cylinder which is divided into 37 compartments from 0 to 36. The numbers, which are not in arithmetical order, are placed alternating on a red or black field. Make your Bets The croupier opens play with the words “faites vos jeux”or, in the case of American Roulette, “make your bets, please.“ You then place your chips, as you wish, on the tableau. If so desired, the croupier will be pleased to place them for you. No more Bets The croupier rolls the Roulette ball into the cylinder against the direction of rotation. It is not possible to place any more bets after the announcement “rien ne va plus” or “no more bets, please”. Winnings As soon as the ball comes to rest on a number, the winning number and the winning colour as well as the two other simple chances are announced. All chances which have a connection with this number are paid out. Zero If the ball comes to rest on zero, all bets placed on the simple chances keep half their value and, in this case, are blocked or halved for the next game. 5 French Roulette and American Roulette The Subtle Differences The Game The same rules apply for French and American Roulette. The differences lie in the outward appearance. The Dynamism of the Games American Roulette is played considerably faster than French Roulette. The playing area is somewhat smaller and there is only one croupier for the players, who usually place their own bets. However, if time permits, the croupier will also place your American Roulette bets for you. Announcing the Winnings In French Roulette, the croupier points to those wagers which have won with the “rateau”, the rake used for gathering in the chips. In American Roulette, winning numbers are pointed out with a small metal figure: the “dolly”. No more Bets The croupier rolls the Roulette ball into the cylinder against the direction of rotation. It is not possible to place any more bets after the announcement “rien ne va plus” or “no more bets, please”. The Coloured Chips In American Roulette, you have the possibility of using your own chips instead of the usual ones. They have no value indicated and are only distributed, in batches of 20 chips of different colours, at the table (twenty chips represent a stake). At the time of purchase, the guests determine the value themselves and this is then clearly marked for all to see. As there is no value indicated on personal chips, they may only be played at this particular table. After you have finished playing, you must cash in the chips directly at the table. Of course, you can also participate in American Roulette using regular chips. 6 Dark Green 133 Mid Yellow Yellow: Tone: Light Green Black Red: C 0 M100 Y100 K0 Yellow: Mid Yellow Black Z E 0/2/3 R O 5/8 S P I E ORPH L M D PAIR 12 12 PASSE PAIR 19-36 12 22 25 24 27 3 6 9 12 15 18 3 21 6 24 9 27 12 30 15 33 18 36 21 Z 0/2/3 E R O D 12 ORPH E L I S P Z 0/2/3 E R O 12 12 P PASSE 19-36 IMPAIR Z E 0/2/3 R O 5/8 S P I E ORPH L P 1 4 7 10 13 16 1 19 4 22 7 25 10 28 13 31 16 34 19 0 2 5 8 11 14 0 17 2 20 5 23 8 26 11 29 14 32 17 35 20 23 26 MANQUE 1-18 MANQUE 1-18 IMPAIR 5/8 S P I PASSE 19-36 5/8 Z E 0/2/3 R O 5/8 S P I E ORPH L E L French Roulette ORPH Gambling Tables PAIR American Roulette 7 Easy Roulette Roulette Pleasure with Comfort The Game You are guaranteed to get a seat if you play Easy Roulette because it is played at special game stations which are operated quite simply using a touch screen. Make yourself comfortable and devote yourself exclusively to the pleasure of the game. Easy Roulette is American Roulette played over a touch screen. You see the playing area on the screen which you also touch to place your bets. After you have “fed” the game station with the SpielCARD or banknotes, your “credit” appears on the display. Betting The game begins with the electronic announcement “Place your bets, please”. You place your bets by touching the field with the selected win chance. For example, if you want to set on “13” you simply touch the space with the number “13”. The good thing about Easy Roulette is that you can play with small stakes. You can easily vary the amount of your bet with the help of the multiplicator key. The second electronic announcement “No more bets, please” informs you that the time for placing bets has finished. As with all other Roulette games, the winning number is determined in a Roulette cylinder with 37 numbers (0 - 36). There are two variants: Easy Roulette Classic The game station is connected with one or more American Roulette tables where the croupiers roll the ball traditionally. Easy Roulette Air The winning number is determined in a Roulette cylinder located near the game stations. In this case, the ball is not set in motion by a croupier but is blown into a special air cylinder by pneumatic pressure. Winning Notification After the ball has fallen into the number compartment, the winning number is announced verbally and all winning fields are highlighted in colour. An animation shows you your winnings which are then added to the sum in the “credit” box. 8 Easy Roulette The End of the Game When you want to finish playing, simply press the “payment” button. Winnings which exceed a certain amount will be handed over, personally, by our staff. If you have any questions, simple press the information button or ask one of our staff members who will be delighted to help you at any time. 1.
