Top 6 reasons why making the move now from R

Retrofitting to HFCs puts your business in a position to avoid expected
R-22 supply shortages, pricing volatility and labor shortages, and can even provide
you with a low-cost supply of R-22.
Top 6 reasons why making
the move now from R-22
makes good business sense
Are you ready for the reduction
and limited supply of R-22?
The HCFC phaseout is fast approaching. This document provides the top 6 reasons why
making the move now from R-22 makes good business sense. The following key facts and
data can help you keep your business ahead of this hot issue.
This document will also provide helpful information on the first versatile R-22 retrofit
refrigerant, DuPont™ ISCEON® MO99™.

Top 6 Reasons to make the MOVE to HFCs now
reason
1
R-22 is going away.
There is less than 1 year until January 1, 2010; the point at which the R-22 supply/
demand imbalance will likely have a significant impact on refrigeration operations.
A supermarket retailer operating as few as 100 stores on R-22 would have to retrofit at
least one store per month to avoid the impact of the R-22 supply/demand imbalance. At the
very least, supermarket retailers should consider the impact this will have on their business.

Potential price for R-22 is volatile.
reason
2
Since January 2003, the price of R-22 in the U.S. market has increased by more
than 500%, and the supply reductions created by ongoing regulations will continue
to influence R-22 price in the future.
R-22 replacement refrigerants are gaining acceptance as an option that helps limit exposure
to potential price volatility. Because they are non-ozone depleting, R-22 replacement
refrigerants are not regulated under the Montreal Protocol and will not be subject to the
same phaseout schedule as R-22.

reason
3
Skilled labor may become scarce.
The demand for new equipment installation and retrofits continues to increase
as the phaseout draws closer. This means that the availability of skilled
refrigeration labor may become increasingly limited.

The U.S. Mid-range Abatement Curve is a reference to help building owners and HVACR contractors understand
which technologies provide the best return on investment for reducing carbon. Supermarket retailers considering
advanced refrigeration technology should carefully evaluate two factors:
1) the Carbon Abatement Cost per ton of CO2e versus direct expansion refrigeration technology, and
2) the total carbon abated in gigatons of CO2e versus direct expansion refrigeration technology.

Recovered or reclaimed R-22 can be

used to service other equipment.
6
Refrigeration contractors can help you reclaim the HCFC-22 in your equipment
and use it to service other equipment. In fact, you can save by using recovered
or reclaimed R-22 refrigerant. This can give you a low-cost supply of R-22 for
future use.

Innovation
Lower costs and comparable energy efficiency
DuPont™ ISCEON® MO99™ refrigerant combines
R-22 pressure—enthalpy characteristics with mineral
oil compatibility in a unique refrigerant that can be
used to replace R-22 over a wide range of evaporator
temperatures. Simply recover the R-22, replace
critical seals, charge refrigerant, restart the system,
and monitor for leaks.
The versatility of ISCEON® MO99 reduces the cost of
a refrigerant retrofit for a major supermarket by up to
$31,400 versus R-404A and up to $6,400 compared
to the R-407A/C refrigerants—resulting in the lowest
total cost of ownership of any R-22 alternative. As a
near drop-in replacement refrigerant, MO99 offers
comparable energy efficiency to R-22.
ISCEON® MO99 is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC)
refrigerant and is not subject to the phaseout under
the Montreal Protocol and the U.S. Regulation. It has
a 42% lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) than
R-404A.
Stay ahead of this hot issue
Make sure your operations can continue to run
smoothly and efficiently during this transition.
Retrofitting to ISCEON® MO99 now and banking the
reclaimed R-22 for servicing your other equipment
can help you prepare for limited availability of R-22
refrigerant.
“The Quick Switch”
With ISCEON® MO99, it is easy to meet phasedown
targets with minimal equipment downtime. MO99
offers similar evaporator pressure settings to R-22,
eliminating the need to change powerhead elements
in thermal expansion valves (TXV). MO99 has a slight
increase in TXV loading; properly sized R-22 TXVs
will not need to be changed. It is compatible with
Mineral Oil/Alkylbenzene/POE, therefore costly oil
changes and labor can be avoided. In addition, MO99
eliminates plugging in TXV strainers and EPR valves.
