On the 9th of May 2014, the Indian Cultural Unit of Kolej Tun Syed Nasir
organized a cultural based-charity event called Rang De Ranggoli. It is a mega event,
which was organized by the students themselves with the help of both the college and
other third parties. This event took us almost 6 months of preparation with a
committee of approximately 40 plus people. As the head of the funding and marketing
exco for this program, throughout this program without me realizing I have used or
applied certain form of values, attitudes, ethics and professionalism in my work.
First of all, as this event is a mega event and it involves the participation of
many, in order to ensure that this event is successful, there are certain values and
attitudes that have to be applied in dealing with different situations. Some of this
values and attitudes would be being respectful of one another’s opinion whereby
everyone should be given equal chances to volunteer their opinion in the different
matters and every opinion should be given good consideration.
Besides, we have to have good teamwork. Teamwork is not something, which
is very easily achieved; it involves mutual understanding, tolerance and good
communication with one another.
In this event I certainly applied the value of
teamwork especially whilst working with my exco members. My exco is responsible
to gather funds to both support the event and also to be donated to the orphanage of
our choice. We had to come up with various ways of generating income.
As a team leader, I ensured that everyone get’s along well with one another
and if there were to be any sort of problem that arises, I would take immediate action
to solve it straight away as I do not want it to affect the performance of my team. I
also make sure that everyone is treated equally and given equal responsibility to
shoulder. I value and appreciate every opinion that my team members may have and I
also allow my team members to correct me whenever I do something wrong, this is so
that I can improve myself to be a better leader.
In terms of ethics and professionalism, as the leader of the funding and
marketing exco, ethics and professionalism is a must have. We do not just deal with
ourselves but with many other people including the public as well as corporate bodies.
In generating funds, we organized few events such as opening a booth during the
entrepreneur’s carnival organized by Kolej Tun Syed Nasir’s entrepreneur club in
Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, we had a flash mob done in Brickfields, we went to ask for
sponsors from various shops and companies and last but not least we also sold foods
to gain income. When it comes to meeting and talking with our potential sponsors,
which include shops and companies, we have to be professional as students when
approaching them. Our language had to be formal and we need to be professional
enough as well as convincing enough so that they would believe in us and would want
to sponsor us though we are only university students. Even through phone calls, there
is a certain ethic to follow when dealing with companies.
Throughout this program I learned the importance of being professional and
how it benefits the others and me. I also realized the importance of knowing certain
ethics, not just whilst being an exco but also when I was given other responsibilities
such as to be the emcee of the event as well as to be the usher for the VIP’s. Ethics is
very important in this aspect as they are all of a higher rank and even throughout the
event, there is certain ethics that need to be followed especially since we have guest
of honors. As an emcee I had to be both ethical and professional in my language and
tone, so as to create the atmosphere of a well-organized college event.
All in all, this program has enabled me to enhance certain values, attitudes,
and ethics and to incorporate professionalism in my daily life. All these are indeed
beneficial to me as a future doctor where there are certain values, which I have to
follow, and there are also certain ethics, which doctors have to follow. Besides, when
it comes to dealing with patients, it is important to be professional just as this
profession is a professional profession.
