If you have any additional support needs
Things to do before I move in
Complete your online induction
We take your health and safety seriously. To ensure your personal safety and
that of others, we will send you an email invite to complete an online health
& safety induction to King’s Residences prior to your arrival. The induction
consists of a questionnaire with three film clips. The questions are designed
to be easy to follow, but it’s important that you pay close attention as your
answers will be scored (just to check that you’ve taken the really important
bits on board!)
It’s very, very, very important that you let us know as soon as possible about any
disability arrangements related to any physical or mental health conditions, if
you haven’t already done so. Please contact the Reservations Team to discuss
your needs, and we’ll make sure everything is in place by the time you arrive.
Your insurance cover
When you live in a King’s Residences, your fees include insurance for everything
you keep in your room against fire, theft and flood, up to a certain value. You
may wish to extend your cover if you’re planning on bringing high value items.
For the ins and outs of value limits and excesses, check the relevant
policy here.
Do I need to pay any fees before I move in?
Book your arrival slot
While we do not ask our students to pay a deposit, we do require that you
validate your booking with us by completing your online induction and booking
your arrival slot. Your tenancy agreement will not be finalised until you do
these two things and the deadline is 4 September.
Once you have completed your online induction, return to the bookings portal
to book your arrival slot using the code generated upon completion of the
online induction. If you still don’t know what time you expect to arrive at the
residence, please book an arrival slot according to your best estimate. Waste
no time and book your arrival slot now.

No payment is required before you move in. Your accommodation fees
will be invoiced to you on a termly basis, with the first instalment due on 25
October 2016.
When your IT account has been set up, you will be able to check your student
accounts online on our fee pay page.

Hot Tip!
If you’re moving into a flatshare, it may be a good idea to have a think
about what items you’d be happy to share with your new flatmates.
(Unless you’re planning to hold bake-off’s in your flat, you may find that
you won’t need each your own hand mixers and rolling pins!)
What not to bring
Leaving aside the obvious, such as pets, crossbows and light aircrafts,
our list of forbidden items includes:
• Anything involving naked flame and smoke, such as candles,
hookah pipes, incense burners, fairy lights and barbecues
• E-cigarette chargers
• Large items of furniture and electrical appliances
• With the exception of mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs
for disabled users, please don’t bring a car, moped, motorbike,
quad bike, articulated lorry or any other motor vehicle. There are
much better ways to get to and from College.

Postscript on Packing:
Possibilities and Limitations
You’re only going to be here for a year and when you move out, someone
else will move in. So although it’s very tempting to try to recreate your room
at home there are some things to bear in mind:
1. Space in your room will be limited, so leave chairs, tables, desks, fridges
and wardrobes at home. It’ll be limited in your wardrobe too, so you
will probably struggle to fit in your entire shoe collection. And, because
drying clothes causes condensation (and, ultimately, mould) in rooms,
please don’t bring a clothes drying rack. There are dryers in every
residence.
2. Wall decorations stay well past your residency, so don’t go all 60-Minute
Makeover on us and start redecorating - that means not attaching
anything to the walls, including Blu-Tac, tape, and pins, because walls with
holes and patches of chipped paint are an eyesore for whoever is next in
your room.
A word of warning: there are no aerial sockets in rooms and wallmounting of TVs is not permitted.
There are plenty of other ways to make your room your own with your
bed linen, a rug, small table lamps and framed, free-standing pictures.
7
Note on electrical equipment
In some of our residences, kitchen and bedding packs may be purchased for
delivery to your room so that they are waiting for you upon your arrival.
Make sure electrics don’t burn down the building - laptops, printers and small
electrical appliances such as speakers, small lamps and alarm radios are all
welcome, as long as they’re in good condition and fitted with plugs or adaptors
that are compatible with the UK electrical system.
If you are moving to Angel Lane, Stratford One, Moonraker Point, Ewen
Henderson or Julian Markham and would like to arrange for a kitchen and
bedding pack, please visit Unite’s Website.
If you’re bringing electronics from outside the UK, you will need three-pin
adaptors that comply with the British electrical system (230V, 50Hz) and
British Standard BS 1363. To avoid the hassle (and save space in your luggage)
we recommend purchasing any electrical equipment from retailers here in the
UK when you arrive. Most things, rice cookers, hair straighteners and the like,
are readily available here.
If you are moving to Tower Bridge, you may order your pack from www.
cabenco-students.co.uk.
The only exceptions are electric shavers: there are two-pin plug sockets
in all residence bedrooms. Extension leads are OK, as long as they’re not
overloaded, but block plug adaptors are not.
Excess Baggage scare?
If you are flying in, we understand that you may not be able to squeeze in your
duvet, pillows and all other essentials in your check in baggage.
If you can’t pack everything you need, it won’t be the end of the world. Home
essentials can be purchased in major London stores or online for delivery.

What’s the big day like?
On the day you move in, several hundred others will be doing just the same. We
do our best to make the whole process as smooth and stress-free as possible,
but you may have to bear with some queuing with lots of excited and anxious
students … and parents.
Here are some things to do and be aware of that will remove some unnecessary
stress from your move.
1. Keep to your arrival slots
Arrivals are spaced out evenly to avoid queues during the day, so please
book and stick to your arrival slot to help everyone get the time and attention
they deserve on this important day.
2. Plan your journey to the residence
London is subject to considerable roadworks throughout the summer and
you are advised to check the traffic news on the BBC website or Transport
for London’s website.
3. Arriving at the Residence
There is no parking at our residences, so on move-in days there will be a stop
and drop system. If you require parking, please refer to these handy parking
maps online. It can be daunting arriving in a new city, why not download a
journey planner app like Citymapper or Google Maps? These will help you find
the best route to your residence and campus.

4. Meet and Greet
Welcome Assistants will meet you at the main drop-off point and direct traffic
to the check-in area. You can easily spot King’s Residence staff by their red
t-shirts and “Ask Me” badges.
5. Unloading vehicles
Welcome Assistants will help you unload, and trolleys will be available to
aid in the conveyance of your bags and other personal effects. As there is
limited space for unloading vehicles, we will need students and parents to
unload their vehicles swiftly to make room for other vehicles. If you think you
might need more time to unload, we suggest that you proceed to the nearest
car park and unload from where you have safely parked. Find out where the
nearest car park is please visit the NCP website. Never leave you baggage
and other personal belongings unattended.
6. Check In
At the check-in desk, you will be handed your flat and room key on
presentation of a government-issued photo ID (eg, passport or driver’s
licence).
7. Finding your room
Once you have your keys, a Welcome Assistant can show to your room, and
help you with your bags along the way. And, voilà you have moved in!

Settling into your room
Find space for your food and utensils in the kitchen
Before we leave you to settle comfortably into your room, there are a
few more things for you to go through:
If you are living in a shared flat, bear in mind that you will be sharing fridge
and storage space with other people. Therefore, be considerate about your
use of space.
Familiarise yourself with the fire evacuation plan
Your residence evacuation plan can be found on the back of the main door,
and fire safety equipment can be found in your flat and room. Make sure that
you orient yourself with the nearest fire exits to your flat. Your kitchen is
equipped with a fire extinguisher and fire blanket. Ensure you know where
these are located and how to use them properly.
Remove all unwanted packaging after unpacking
Remove all boxes, bags and other items that may cause blockages from all
access routes within your flat and along the corridors. Your residence has a
designated bin area for all refuse.
More information
Review your e-inventory form
Within three days of your arrival, one of our Welcome Assistants will be
knocking on your door to go through the room and flat inventory with you. We
made every effort to ensure your accommodation is in tip-top shape before
you arrive, and we need you to confirm that everything is indeed in place and
in good working order.
The inventory is the official record of the condition of your room and flat when
you arrive, and will be compared with the condition of your room and flat on
your departure. If you find that you failed to report something during the
joint review with a Welcome Assistant, please speak to a member of staff at
Reception and we’ll make sure this is noted and addressed as well. Note that
you will have up 7 days to raise any modifications to your check-in inventory
form.

If there’s anything we haven’t covered, chances are you’ll find the information
you need in the A-Z guide available on the website. Otherwise, Reception
staff are available to provide assistance..
