Matthew 24: 36-51
Matthew 36-41
36“Now concerning that day and hour no one knows — neither
the angels in heaven, nor the Son — except the Father
only. 37As the days of Noah were, so the coming of the Son of
Man will be. 38For in those days before the flood they were
eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the
day Noah boarded the ark. 39They didn’t know until the flood
came and swept them all away. So this is the way the coming of
the Son of Man will be: 40Then two men will be in the field: one
will be taken and one left. 41Two women will be grinding at the
mill: one will be taken and one left. 42Therefore be alert, since
you don’t know what day your Lord is coming. 43But know this:
If the homeowner had known what time the thief was coming, he
would have stayed alert and not let his house be broken
into. 44This is why you also must be ready, because the Son of
Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
Matthew 36:42-51
45“Who then is a faithful and sensible slave, whom his
master has put in charge of his household, to give them
food at the proper time? 46That slave whose master
finds him working when he comes will be rewarded. 47I
assure you: He will put him in charge of all his
possessions. 48But if that wicked slave says in his heart,
‘My master is delayed,’ 49and starts to beat his fellow
slaves, and eats and drinks with drunkards, 50that
slave’s master will come on a day he does not expect
and at an hour he does not know. 51He will cut him to
pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites. In
that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
The Backstory
• We’ve talked previously about Jesus
letting them know what was coming in the
end times.
• Now Jesus tells them how they should live
in light of that information
• He compares it to the days of Noah before
the flood, not the most fun analogy!
• Spoiler alert, almost everyone drowns!
The Content
• The key is that we need to be ready for his return!
• That means we don’t have a lot of time to be
wasting in this life.
• I don’t know the specific day or time, but I know it’s
one day less than it was this time yesterday!
• The end will come in a moment so quick we don’t
have time to do anything.
• Really for most people that is how death comes as
well.
• We think we have forever, but all we really can
count on is right now

The Outcome
• Van Halen might have some of it figured
out but they certainly are wasting what
they know on some superficial stuff!
• Jesus went on to tell them what they
should be concentrating on in addition to
just living urgently
• He told them in the form a parable about
servants and lead servants
Leaders in kingdom
• Our role is to keep working on the things that Jesus
would be working on
• We only have a short time to make a true impact for
the kingdom
• As Max Barnett said in the conference, the only thing
that goes to heaven is people!
• So our task is to be about telling others about Jesus
and helping them grow to be more like him.
• The urgency is because we don’t know if Jesus will
come back or if this will be our last day or someone
else’s last day
• So live this life urgently, do it right, do it right now!
