A party source said top Congress functionaries are reaching out to the KHADC MDCs to muster support to oust the EC led by the suspended Congress CEM. If the Congress manages to get the numbers, the party may move a nonconfidence motion during the KHADC session starting from Tuesday. However, sources said the MDCs who were approached by the party are not willing to forge an alliance with the Congress considering the issues plaguing the State which are yet to be solved by the party in power. With the Assembly elections just six months away, the MDCs are not keen to have any truck with the Congress as they consider that this will Angry cricket fans break television sets in Ahmedabad on Sunday after India suffered a humiliating 180-run loss to Pakistan in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 at The Oval cricket stadium in London. Gohain to launch LPG scheme for poor today Centre to give Rs 1600 to each beneficiary By Our Reporter SHILLONG: The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) to provide free LPG connections to women belonging to BPL households will be launched by Union Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain here on Monday. As per the scheme, oil marketing companies will provide free LPG connections to poor women with an aim to empower them and bring about social transformation in their lives. An official statement said on Sunday that availability of clean cooking fuel has been a major challenge for rural households in the country. According to the Cen- tre, lack of access to clean fuel adversely affects the health of particularly women and children in households using unclean fuel. The government is committed to providing clean fuel to all poor households, the statement said. The LPG connections in this scheme will be released in the name of women only. Initial support of Rs 1,600 for providing an LPG connection would be given by the Centre for each new LPG connection in the form of cash assistance. The Centre said while selection of beneficiaries will be from BPL families, preference will be given to SC/ST and weaker sections of society. The beneficiary list will be as per the Socio Economic Caste Census, 2011 which was conducted in a transparent manner by the Ministry of Rural Development and State Government. As far as implementation is concerned, women of the BPL households, who are not having LPG connections, can apply for a new LPG connection under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana to the distributor. While submitting the forms, women have to submit address proof, bank account and Aadhaar card, the statement said. Oil marketing companies will organise camps at various locations for releasing LPG connections to BPL families. Don’t add fuel to fire: Bindo to CM Rail imbroglio By Our Reporter By Our Reporter SHILLONG: UDP has asked Chief Minister Mukul Sangma to desist from adding "lubricants" to the fire and show restraint on the railway issue. UDP working president Bindo Lanong said on Sunday that the adamant stand of the chief minister will not solve the current problem. "What is needed is not an aggressive stand. There is a need to have cool approach to settling the matter and he should not add fuel to the fire," Lanong said. According to Lanong, while announcing ShillongSohra railway line just six months before the next Assembly polls, the chief minister is only provoking the pressure groups instead of finding a solution to the problem. "What is the intention of the chief minister in announcing the Shillong-Sohra project which even cabinet ministers are not aware of," Lanong said. NEW DELHI: In a shocking case of negligence, a newborn was allegedly declared "dead" by the staff of a central government hospital on Sunday but was found to be alive just before the infant was to be buried. A police officer had earlier said the baby died but later claimed that there was another case in the hospital and that it was a case mis- taken identity. The baby is alive, the officer, who did not want to be named, said. The incident occurred at Safdarjung hospital when a resident of Badarpur delivered a baby on Sunday morning. The nursing staff apparently failed to find any sign of breathing. "The doctor and the nurs- ing staff declared the baby dead and sealed the body in a pack, labelled it and handed it over to us for burial," said Rohit, the father of the child. As the mother's condition was not stable, she remained in the hospital while the father and other family members took the body and went home, making preparations for the burial. But then Rohit's sister suddenly felt some movement in the pack and when they opened it, they found the baby breathing and moving its limbs. Immediately a PCR call was made and the baby was rushed to Apollo Hospital from where it was shifted to Safdarjung. The shocked parents have approached the police affect their poll prospects in case they decide to contest the Assembly polls. Some non-Congress MDCs consider that starting from the ban on coal and limestone mining to issues related to the jurisdiction of MUDA and curtailing of powers of headmen, the Congress had not done anything to ameliorate the concerns of the people affected. Sources close to Syiem said the Congress had first tried to target the KHADC CEM by passing the dual post bill and subsequently to weaken him, the party placed him under suspension for three years. The fresh move of the Congress to oust him from power is the last ditch effort ahead of the Assembly polls, sources added. However, the UDP MDCs are unlikely to support the Congress as in the past UDP chief Donkupar Roy had said the party desires that the Syiemled EC completes its full term. Sources added that even when the Central Executive Committee of the UDP recommended withdrawal of support to Syiem in the past, UDP MDCs Donkupar Sumer and Teinwell Dkhar had extended support to him. Conrad undecided on return to state politics SHILLONG: NPP national president and Tura MP Conrad Sangma is yet to decide whether to come back to state politics in view of the 2018 Assembly polls or to stay put in national politics. In the last 2013 Assembly polls, NPP faced its worst ever defeat with the party getting only two legislators, James Sangma and Nihim Shira. Later, the party improved its position in the GHADC polls forming the Executive Committee led by NPP which, however, was ousted on March 31 this year. The party regained its position further with the landslide victory of Conrad in the by-election to Tura Lok Sabha seat. Buoyed by the victory, the party is planning to go bigger in the 2018 Assembly polls. However, the party supporters are yet to get any clear picture whether Conrad will lead the party in Meghalaya or some other leader will be projected. While from the family, Conrad and James are active in politics, their sister and former Tura MP Agatha Sangma is unlikely to steer the party due to her ill health. When contacted, Conrad said that it is too early to project anyone as the chief ministerial candidate for the 2018 polls. According to Conrad, it is after all the elected MLAs who will decide their leader. He, however, remained non committal to a question whether he would return to state politics. NPP to wait & watch on EC formation By Our Reporter SHILLONG: At a time when suspended NPP MDC Boston Marak, who is aspiring for the post of GHADC CEM, is hopeful of forming the next Executive Committee, NPP has decided to wait and watch. The cabinet on June 15 had recommended withdrawal of administrator's rule in GHADC. Later, Boston had claimed the support of 15 MDCs to form the next EC. However, NPP national president Conrad Sangma said it was up to the governor whether to accept the recommendation of the Cabinet or not. "We are waiting and watching. We even heard that there are differences within the group led by Boston," he said. (Contd on P-10) Security to be stepped up for rail protest By Our Reporter SHILLONG: Security will be tightened in the district for the sit-in protest called by three pressure groups on June 21. When contacted, Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills P.S Dkhar said no communication was received from the agitating organisations till date. However, East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak said, "We will put adequate security arrangements." When asked on the cases of arson, he said there are no fresh cases of arson on Sunday. SBI MEGA E-AUCTION 23rd June 2017 regarding the case. "How can they be so irresponsible and declare a baby, who is alive, as dead? If we had not opened the sealed pack in time, my baby really would have died and we would never have come to know the truth. This is a gross negligence on the part of the hospital and the guilty should be punished," Rohit said.
