Can Play!
Intramural Sports offers all Northeastern University students the chance to participate together in a wide variety of team sports and individual sports. Everyone has the chance to compete, stay active, and make friends, regardless of skill level. Whether it’s your first time playing or you are a seasoned vet, we have the right league for you.
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
You can register a team online during the registration period. To register you will need to provide your teammates’ names and NUID numbers. WHAT IF I CANNOT FIND A TEAM TO PLAY ON?
If you want to find a team to play, you can sign up online as a free agent. Free agents can be contacted and added by managers who need extra players for their team. Since free agents are not guaranteed a spot on a team, you are encouraged to attend intramural games to meet managers that have open spots on their rosters.
WHAT DIFFERENT LEAGUES ARE OFFERED?
Some team sports are set up in leagues such as open competitive, open recreational, and co‐rec. Players may play on one open team and one co‐rec team within the same sport. Open teams have no restriction on the number of males and females on the field. Co‐rec teams have restrictions on the number of males and females on the field at a certain time, depending on the sport. Open competitive teams are more interested in winning and losing, while open recreational teams are more interested in having fun and making friends.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PLAY?
All students in good standing and who have paid their recreation fee are eligible to play in intramural sports. However, current varsity players are not eligible to play in the same or a related sport. WHERE CAN I GET MORE INFORMATION ABOUT INTRAMURAL SPORTS?
The intramural handbook contains intramural rules and policies and can be found online at www.campusrec.neu.edu/intramurals. Specific sport rules can also be found online. Any other questions can be directed to the intramural department by emailing [email protected] or calling (617) 373‐7895.

OPEN:
These teams are made of any number of males and females. Teams can be made up entirely of males, entirely of females, or a mix of the two.
CO‐REC:
These leagues require a minimum number of males and females to play at all times. This restriction depends on the sports being played. Please view the specific sport rules for the requirements for each sport.
COMPETITIVE:
Competitive leagues mostly consist of teams that are interested in winning over participation. Many of these teams are veteran teams, who have been playing together for multiple semesters.
RECREATIONAL: Recreational leagues consist of teams that emphasize fun and socializing over winning. Many newly formed teams begin in this division while they are still learning the various sports’ rules.
**All rules and policies apply to each league and division.**
and Defaults
Forfeits are detrimental to the entire program and are an injustice to participants who want to play. Participants look forward to playing and are very disappointed when opponents fail to show. Therefore, forfeit bonds are important to discourage forfeited games. This procedure is designed to eliminate forfeits. We do not want to discourage anyone from playing. We want you to participate!
1. A team will forfeit a game when:
 The minimum number of players required are not present and ready to play at the scheduled game time.  The team is found using an ineligible player.
 Any team’s players or spectators engage in a fight or altercation.
 The Intramural Supervisor believes the game cannot safely continue due to flagrant or unsportsmanlike behavior.
2. In the event that neither team is able to field the minimum number of players required to begin the game, a double forfeit will be recorded and each team will be given a loss in the standings.
3. At the beginning of the season, each team must pay a $20 refundable forfeit bond. Any team that forfeits a game during the regular season will receive a loss for the contest, and that team will lose $10 of their refundable forfeit bond. A team that forfeits a second time will lose the other $10 of their forfeit bond and will be dropped from the league. 4. A team may default a game by completing the online defaulted game form (http://www.campusrec.neu.edu/intramurals/GameDefault.php) 24 hours prior to the scheduled game time. Once submitted, a team cannot change their mind on their decision to default the game. Defaulted games still count as a loss in the standings, but teams will not lose any part of their refundable forfeit bond.
5. For entrance into playoffs, a forfeited or defaulted game is the second tiebreaker for teams with the same record. So, forfeits are also detrimental to a team’s shot into the playoffs.
The Intramural Sports department expects all participants, managers, and spectators to conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner prior to, during, and after an intramural game. Because sportsmanship is such an important expectation, a team’s sportsmanship is the first tiebreaker for playoffs when teams have the same record.
 While games can get heated at times, staying in control of your emotions is an important part of intramural sports.
 Remember that intramural sports is emphasizes participation more than winning.
 Having a negative attitude during play detracts from the enjoyment of all other participants.
 Being courteous to others allows all participants enjoyment of intramural sports.
 So, be respectful and have fun!
Sportsmanship Award:
 Intramural sport participants displaying good sportsmanship are eligible for the Intramural Sportsmanship Recognition Award.  The award will be given out at the discretion of the intramural sports staff, and winners will receive a t‐shirt as well as be recognized online.
