Most businesses can support school
curriculum - this is not extra work!
 Donations could be tax deductible, so potentially it
won’t cost anything
 Most big companies have a CSR policy
 The positive publicity can be worth thousands
 Lastly it can be hugely enjoyable and rewarding for all
parties involved
 Tip – Join your local Chamber of Commerce, they will know what
companies want to work with schools

Plan for success
Expose yourself to the risk of gaining sponsorship & support
 Keep an open mind.
 Some people have never thought about Sponsorship or supporting
a school, talk about it openly, make it sound fun and exciting,
believe passionately in your cause.
 Know what it is you want.
 If you get an offer of sponsorship or support be prepared, describe
your needs rather than having to make them up on the spot and
give examples of what impact their support will have.

Plan for success
Expose yourself to the risk of gaining sponsorship & support
 Try and match a business to a need
 Sounds obvious but so many people concentrate on the numbers. Try to
match a need or project to that business, research them and see if there is
anything on their website, ask if they are involved with anything else. Try
using ‘TED’.
 Have a variety of different opportunities to offer – it’s harder to say no
 Have a number of projects in mind from say £500 to £25,000, if they are
interested you want them to say yes. If you only have one option and the
figures don’t fit it will be a No!

Plan for success
Expose yourself to the risk of gaining sponsorship & support
 Not everyone says yes, but then again not everyone says no!
 A no can simply be a not now, remember it’s a numbers game. Be polite
ask to stay in touch and move on to the next
 Sponsorship can come in many forms, not just money. Time and
expertise can cost thousands
 Free educational trips or visits into school by a business can be of huge
value and have a big impact on pupils

Plan for success
Expose yourself to the risk of gaining sponsorship & support
 Start small and build
 If you get a Sponsor, build a relationship, tell them this is what you want,
if you take the money and just say thank you it’s very difficult to go back
in 12months.
 W.I.F.M works both ways, try to identify what a business wants before
you ask for what you want
 ‘What’s in it for Me?’ tell any potential sponsor what you can do for them
first, publicity, feature in Newsletter, leaflets in bookbags, Fairs etc. Sell
yourself, try to use FAB!
