So, you want to volunteer….. Are you 18 years old or over? Are you a “People Person?” Do you have a desire to “Pay Back?” or make a difference in your community? Then you qualify to be a volunteer at our Shelter. The great thing about volunteering at the MKOC shelter is that you can decide when you want to serve. We are open every Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. and when the temperature rises above 100 degrees or drops below 32. We also open up when there is a possibility of threatening severe weather. You can sign up to work any of the following shifts: 6:00 to 9:00pm – There is a lot of interaction with clients during this shift. Clients are checking in, beds are being assigned, the evening meal is being set up and served. Lots of activity. Volunteers assist with setting up and serving the evening meal. You may also be called upon to sign in clients, set up cots, assist with sleeping arrangements, organize supplies, clean up kitchen. and be available to assist or answer questions from clients. 9:00pm to 1:00am – Things are starting to settle down at the shelter. Clients are showering, watching a DVD, playing card games with most just going to bed. Volunteers provide assistance by signing in clients, setting up cots, assisting with sleeping arrangements, organizing supplies, and being available to assist or answer questions from clients. 1:00am to 5:00pm - If you are a student and need quiet time to study or you love to read and can’t seem to find the time or a quiet place….. then this is the shift for you. Truth be known, this is the shift where we are most in need of Volunteers. Guests’ sleep and volunteers are silent and available for any need. Volunteers can read, watch a video or listen to music with earphones, etc. 5:00am to 8:00am – If you are an early riser then this shift is for you. You can run by on your way to work or class. Volunteers prepare coffee, set up breakfast (pastries), and help as guests wake up, do their assigned chores, pick up cots, clean, and get ready to go for the day. You may be experiencing a little hesitancy about volunteering. We agree, it does sound a little scary until you get to know us. To ease your fears, please understand that there are very, very rarely any incidents. Our clients are just seeking a warm safe place to sleep for the night, not to make trouble. Most of the clients are asleep by 9:00p.m. However, we do have a Denton County Sheriff’s Deputy on duty from 5:30pm to 10:30pm. There will always be a veteran volunteer on the premises during your shift. The most important thing to remember is that our clients are just people like you. They just happen to be in a situation that we all could be in if we miss just one paycheck. We encourage you to volunteer or just come by for a test drive. See what we are all about. You’ll be glad you did. To volunteer just follow the volunteerspot.com link at www.kingoutreachcenter.com, send a request to [email protected] or call/text Debbie Millican at 940.206.8683
