Primary PE and Sport Premium: 2016-17 Evidencing the impact at Christ Church Upper Armley C of E Primary School Introduction The PE and Sport Premium is government funding, designed to help primary schools improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils. It was introduced in 2013 with the aim of encouraging more people to play sport safely from a young age, and help them keep playing sport throughout their life, no matter what their economic or social background. Schools receive PE and sport premium funding based on the number of pupils in years 1 to 6; those with 17 or more pupils on roll receive £8,000 and an additional payment of £5 per pupil. This document will evidence how we are using the funding and the impact made. PE Curriculum In physical education children take part in a wide variety of activities. They learn that being active is fun and that it is important to lead an active lifestyle. At the beginning of their school life children learn and explore basic movement skills, they develop these skills throughout their time at Christ Church and leave as confident movers able to play a wide range of sports. We are an active school and a member of the Youth Sports Trust. We received the Silver award in the summer of 2015, our aim is to progress to the Gold Award. We also applied for the coveted Sainsbury’s School Games Award; we were really pleased to find out that we achieved a silver grade. The table above highlights how we have used the funding. The continuous CPD that the P.E coordinator receives is crucial, it allows him to enhance his curriculum knowledge and keep up to date with current events and opportunities. We have also used the funding to enhance all staff’s curriculum knowledge and skills set. The Real P.E scheme is up and running throughout school, all staff are using this model and the training provided has helped to build their confidence when delivering high quality P.E lessons. We have invested in the Leeds Schools Swimming programme, providing lessons for children in KS2, we have also paid for extra blocks of sessions. The impact of this has been very positive. The extra lessons have enable children to have a better chance of being able to swim 25 metres when they leave primary school. Although we do not have our own transport we believe that it is vital that our children have the opportunity to be as active as possible and compete in as many sporting events as they can throughout the year. For this reason we have used private transport to enable children to travel to other schools on several occasions. The Leeds Rhinos Foundation plays a crucial part in many schools across Leeds. We have an excellent relationship with the Foundation and use their resources on a regular basis. The children have received several sets of coaching sessions. The impact of this is they gain knowledge from a skilled rugby professional. We have received visits from ‘Ronnie the Rhino’, seen all of the trophies won last season and most importantly the children have had chance to meet several 1st team players. The impact of this is high, seeing these professionals, many of whom are from the local area; inspire the children to reach for their goals and dreams. The children see that if someone from a similar background to them can achieve their dreams then there is no reason why they can’t achieve their goals too. ©Copyright Yorkshire Sport Foundation 2016
