December 2014 Dear Parents and Carers, As significant adults in your children’s lives we are so very lucky to be some of the people that your children trust and share their thoughts with. Over the last few years, as a school team, we have become more and more aware of the scary realities of life that our children are being exposed to. We know that they are seeing and hearing ‘nasty stuff’ because of the conversations that we have with them about what sorts of behaviour are ok and which ones are not ok! Like you, I am sure; we believe childhood is a very precious thing that should be cherished. However, we are becoming increasingly aware and concerned about what our children are watching, hearing and seeing on television, DVDs and computer games. We believe and that our children are being exposed to things that should only be seen by older teenagers or even adults. We know this because of the things that they tell us and talk to us about, the things we overhear, the behaviour that they show towards each other, the conversations that they have with the children in their class, the games they play on the playground, the pictures they draw and the stories they write. Of course we understand that it is impossible to protect our children from every horrible event, much as we would all like to, BUT what we can do is to make sure they don’t find out about horrible things before they need to. You can do this by making sure that they don’t see films that are too old for them or play on games that are inappropriate and hard for them to make sense of. Please help us to keep your children’s childhood special. Let us work together to keep them as innocent and as precious as we possibly can, by making sure they don’t have access to films or games that show them things they simply shouldn’t see or even know about! What can you do? Please take the time to check what the games that they are playing are about, sit with them and watch the game play content. Telephone (0151) 474-3060 www.fazakerleyprimary.co.uk Fax (0151) 330-0375 Make sure that they haven’t encouraged or begged you to buy them something that YOU aren’t happy to talk to them about, explain to them or watch with them! Make sure that they are not watching or playing on the games or films of older brothers or sisters or even your own. Remember that children in primary school should absolutely not be exposed to films or playing games that have one of the following logos on the packaging. These are totally inappropriate for primary school aged children because they deal with and they show things that they should not be seeing. We understand that this can at times be hard and I am sure that many children will have some of these films (or similar) on their list for Santa. You will probably have to say NO more than once, not pass the message to Santa, work hard to withstand ‘pester power’ maybe some sulking or even a few tantrums! If you want you can blame me! But not one of the games below, which we know our children are playing on regularly, are primary age appropriate. It will mean that you are giving your children the best possible gift, the gift of innocence, of youth and a childhood. Children grow up far too soon and will have to come to terms with the sad realities of life eventually, but let’s try to delay this as long as we can. Let’s work together to protect the children we care for. Many thanks, Mrs Carter and the staff of Fazakerley Primary. Telephone (0151) 474-3060 www.fazakerleyprimary.co.uk Fax (0151) 330-0375
