The Foundation
UniHealth was created out of the mergers of health-care providers, including Health West Foundation and
Lutheran Hospital Society of Southern California. In 1998, UniHealth converted into a private non-profit
foundation focused on improvement of healthcare and access thereto in Southern California. Since
inception, the Foundation has been responsible for over $200 million in charitable giving to Southern
California non-profit hospitals, community health clinics and related entities.
UniHealth Foundation continues to expand its tradition of care, to embrace innovation solutions and to
encourage partnerships that benefit the communities we serve.

UniHealth Foundation is an independent private healthcare foundation established in 1998. We are

The position
President
Responsible for all Foundation grantmaking activities:
• Developing Foundation interface consistent with emerging healthcare environment, delivery
systems, and social/environmental factors impacting health through impact projects with
significant grantees
 Pre-admission and post-discharge resources
 Community health agencies and clinics
 Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC)
• Maintaining and strengthening existing grantmaking activities in partnership and collaboration
with non-profit hos pi tal and other healthcare constituencies
• Grant program initiation
 Development
 Presentation for Board approval
 Funding
 Interim grantee performance monitoring
 Completion and follow-up
• Adherence to Foundation Grantmaking Framework

Duties of the President
IN CLOSE CONCERT/COMMUNICATION WITH AND AS DIRECTED BY BOARD CHAIR AND CEO:

Responsible for overall daily operations
 Board of Directors relations and communication, to include public/community/grantee
relations, new Board member orientation
 Preparation and organization of all Board meetings and materials
 Implementation of Board policy
 Assist in implementation of the strategic planning process, including production of written
plan document with timeline and deadlines
 Implement short and long term strategic goals
Management
 Recruitment, hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of competent staff
 Liaison with Foundation's legal counsel and other advisors
 Personnel and administrative policies
 Legal compliance (all local, state and federal requirements pertaining to private
foundations), including the filing of all tax and other forms necessary to continue the
Foundation in good standing as a charitable organization and preserve its tax status
 Responsible for maintenance of accurate Foundation records
Finance
 Development and management of Foundation operating budget
 Development and management of Foundation grant’s budget with CFO oversight of
Foundation assets and resources
Grantmaking
 Development and implementation of grantmaking process and strategic guidance.
 Procedures for monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of funded programs
 Public relations
 Represent Foundation to other philanthropic and non-profit organizations, the press,
regulators, and the public at large
 When appropriate, serve as representative to the media

Candidate Qualifications

Executive level experience, preferably with budget responsibility, in similar foundation or
healthcare services organization
An advanced degree (Masters or a PhD) in healthcare or related field is preferred
Knowledge and familiarity of Southern California, preferably in both non-profit and for -profit
healthcare organizations and networks
Upper management experience
Awareness of the innovative initiatives taking place to create organizations, methods and
programs that will have a significant impact on the overall health of communities and/or will
significantly help controlling healthcare expenditures
Developing and managing through qualitative measures and milestones for accomplishment,
while maintaining fiscal responsibility
Record of success in managing a grantmaking organization highly desirable
Experience working effectively with a Board of Directors and CEO
Leadership ability and exceptional organizational skills
Record of success in developing strategic goals and implementing plans to attain them.
