What We Seek To Accomplish: S.T.E.A.M. is S.T.E.M. + A
Our goal is to support future leaders in creating and sustaining a culture of innovation through supporting
education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (S.T.E.M.), and the overall S.T.E.A.M.
framework. The S.T.E.A.M. framework allows holistic learning in a structure that integrates skills from all
subjects, and promotes interactive, collaborative, problem solving learning. This is a boost for students
who find a way to combine analytical and creative skills to become innovators, and thus future leaders.
Because of this type of innovation, America birthed companies like Google, Pixar and Apple. This is
supporting artist who may also enjoy a varying level of analytical interests, and analysts who may enjoy
the arts (i.e. Einstein who played the violin), and all students who are seeking ways to be problem solvers
and innovators for the “21 st century”.
While S.T.E.M. careers (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) do fall under S.T.E.A.M., S.T.E.A.M.
broadens the conversation to include careers in the Arts, too. However, we are purposeful in our support
of both S.T.E.M. and S.T.E.A.M., as we believe that our future leaders will need to come from all aspects
of learning. In addition, we know that S.T.E.M. career opportunities are in high demand, yet fewer
women and minorities are seeking these opportunities. Thus, we want to encourage scholars to seek
overall S.T.E.A.M. careers, and not to abandon S.T.E.M. career opportunities because of lack of
understanding or confidence in being able to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math skills.

About Gloria A. Byrd
Gloria A. Byrd was a vibrant community leader who served as the president of the Queen City Women’s Club,
the predecessor organization of Queen City (OH) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. Although she
succumbed to breast cancer in 2003 at the age of 45, her leadership served as a catalyst for the formation of
the chapter. In remembrance, the Chapter established (in 2005), college scholarships for
academically-talented young women who reside in the Valley Area. Since its inception, thousands
of dollars in financial support have been awarded to outstanding scholars.
