Asia Bibi was sentenced to death for blasphemy
against Islam’s prophet Mohammed in November
2010. She is the first woman ever to receive the
death sentence for blasphemy in Pakistan. When
Muslim women pressured Asia to convert to Islam
in June 2009, she told them Jesus is alive, but
Mohammed is dead. Asia was arrested for making
derogatory comments against Mohammed. No
Christian in Pakistan has ever been executed under
the blasphemy law, but in several cases, extremists
have murdered Christians after their release.
Asia’s conviction and death sentence have brought
international attention to the country’s blasphemy
laws, with Christians calling for her release and a
repeal of the laws, and extremists demanding that
she be executed. In June 2013 she was transferred
to a new prison, five hours away from her family.
Asia’s appeal was denied on 16 October 2014
and her death sentence upheld by the Lahore High
Court. An appeal to the Supreme Court will likely
take years of more waiting.
Dear Asia,
“Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in
God who raises the dead” 2 Corinthians 1:9. When one part of the body suffers the whole
body suffers. Many Christians around the world are standing with you. My prayers are with
you as you endure the fellowship of suffering. We encourage you to take advantage of every
opportunity to tell others about Jesus. “Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him; do not
fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes
to pass” Psalm 37:7. “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain” Philippians 1:21.
