What are you completing the Impact
Assessment on (which policy, service,

ENV 11.04 Somerset Waste Partnership
Savings accrued from reduced waste volumes
Section 1 – Description of what is being impact assessed
In the next financial year we expect Somerset households to produce less waste than
was produced this year. As there is a cost for collecting and disposing of every tonne of
waste produced a reduction in waste will result in a reduction in costs of between £583k
and £619k. This document assesses any potential impact from that projected saving.
Section 2A – People or communities that are targeted or could be affected (for
Equalities - taking particular note of the Protected Characteristic listed in action table)
Somerset Waste Board; Somerset Waste Partnership; May Gurney CIC; Viridor PLC
Section 2B – People that the policy or service is delivered by
Somerset Waste Partnership; May Gurney CIC; Viridor PLC
Section 3 – Evidence and data used for the assessment (Attach documents where
appropriate)
Draft Budget Commentary report for Somerset Waste Board 16/12/2011; Waste
tonnage data 2011/2012
Section 4 – Conclusions drawn about the impact of the proposed change or new
service/policy (Please use prompt sheet for help with what to consider):

Business Risk
Status: Green. The assumption is that waste reduction trends will continue into the next
financial year. The continuing economic uncertainty and increasing efforts by
producers and retailers to reduce excess packaging means this is a highly likely
outcome. However there is a small risk that waste arisings will be above projections
and therefore cost savings will not be met. Likelihood: 2 Slight Impact: 2 Minor
(Total 4)
Section 5 – After consideration please state your final recommendations based on the
findings from the impact assessment. Also include any examples of good practice and
positive steps taken.
We can be confident that waste reduction trends will continue and that accepting this as
a budget reduction will have no impact on Somerset’s residential population.
Section 6 – How will the assessment, consultation and outcomes be published and
communicated? E.g. reflected in final strategy, published.
