She really wins when she learns the meaning of good sportsmanship. Questions and Comments 1.What were the reasons Gibby gave that she might not win a ribbon at Field Day? Gibby said that she wasn’t good at the one-legged race, the sack race or jumping high. What advice did Raimundo give to Gibby? “Practice makes perfect.” What do you think that means? 2.When Gibby said that she was not good at the sack race, what did Raimundo tell Gibby? “You can’t be good at everything.” Do you think that’s true? 3.Raimundo thought Gibby would do well running in a race. Why? Because Gibby was one of the fastest runners in school. What are some things that you are good at doing? 4.What did the people watching Field Day do when someone won an event? They cheered for them. What did the people watching do when someone lost an event? They cheered for them also. Was that a good thing to do? Why or why not? How does it make you feel when someone cheers for you? 5.When Gibby didn’t win certain events, her friends helped encourage her. How do you think it made Gibby feel for her friends to tell her these things? How could you encourage others? 6.Gibby repeated to herself, “I have to win, I have to win.” to stay positive and focused so she wouldn’t quit. Does it help to say positive things to yourself? How? What could you say? 7.What happened to Clayton during the running race? He fell down. What did Gibby do? She stopped racing and came back to help Clayton. What did the two Clydes do? They ran past everyone and crossed the finish line first. 8.Gibby lost the race because she helped Clayton when he fell. Did Gibby want to lose? No. Was she upset she lost? Yes. Why? 9.Although she lost the race, Mimi told Gibby that she was a winner. Why? Because helping another person makes you a winner. What did Mimi tell Gibby about winning? Winning is fun, but it isn’t everything. What makes you feel good about yourself is how you play. 10.What special award did Gibby receive? The ribbon for best sportsman-like conduct. Do you think this make Gibby a winner? Why or why not? www.ncyi.org 1-800-477-8277 Activities 1. Discuss the importance of practice, and what it means to practice. Allow students to draw a picture showing something they can do well now, but they had to practice the task in order to be able to do it. Provide time for sharing. 2. Discuss the importance of encouraging others. Talk about how the Wumblers cheered for each other as they were participating in the field day events and how that helped the person to do better and try harder. Have students to think of positive things they can say to others when they are attempting to do something that is difficult for them. 3. Construct a balance beam by placing a six-foot 2”x 4” on bricks or blocks. Allow each student to have 2 turns trying to walk the balance beam. On the first turn, allow those watching to say negative things to the person (“You’re going to fall off.”, “You can’t do it.”, etc.). On the person’s next turn, have students say positive things (“You’re doing great.”, “Keep trying.”, “Don’t give up.”, etc.). After the activity, discuss how it felt to hear people saying negative things as opposed to how it felt to hear people saying positive things. Which time was it easier to walk the balance beam?
