Diabetes “Runs in My Family”
Have you ever heard anyone in
your family say; “Diabetes, runs
in my family”. Then you
should get tested. Studies found
that losing weight along with a
healthy diet can reduce your
risk for Diabetes. However, if it
runs in your family you may
have a genetic disposition or
similar unhealthy lifestyle.
Everyone especially the
relatives of type 2 diabetics,
should eat healthy, exercise, and
get tested; because it may
prevent or delay onset of
Diabetes. Smoking doubles the
risk of developing diabetes; if
you smoke quit. Maintain a
healthy blood pressure and
stress increases the risk of
diabetes. Avoid the risk factors
for Diabetes and get tested.

foods. Exercise: at least 20 minutes a
day 3 to 5 days a week. Make time or

Educate yourself: if your family has a
history or if you experience any of the
following signs and symptoms contact
your doctor:
 Frequent urination or trips to
bathroom
 Unquenchable Thirst or
Thirsty ALL the time
 Unexplainable weight loss or
just losing weight for no
reason
 Numbness/Tingling in your

Understand Diabetes: The issue
starts with the Pancreases’ ability to
make enough of the hormone called
insulin. Insulin delivers glucose to
cells in your body to use as fuel.
When people over eat that adds to
the issue; the body can’t make
enough insulin or too much is
made.
Steps You Can Take: Use your
Doctor’s advice, control blood
sugar levels, following the Doctor’s
prescribed medication schedule.
Do not modify insulin injections or
how many pills you take unless
advised by your doctor.
Lifestyle Modification: Maintain a
normal weight, change to a healthy
diet, and exercise - consistency is
the key.
Support: learning that you or a
family member has diabetes can be
depressing; join a support group or
seek religious counseling.
