First Strathclyders confirmed for Commonwealth Games

First Strathclyders confirmed for
Commonwealth Games
Two hockey officials have become the first Strathclyders to be confirmed
for participation in the Glasgow Commonwealth Games next year.
Martin Monaghan, a partner in the law firm Caeser and Howie and a Strathclyde
graduate from 1990, had applied to be a volunteer at the Games and was surprised
and delighted to find out that he had been appointed by the International Hockey
Federation (FIH) to an official role in the tournament.
Following a successful playing career where he was awarded a University Blue for
his achievements, including representing Scotland at Under 21 level, Martin took up
officiating and became a highly respected umpire.
As well as umpiring top matches at home in Scotland, Martin achieved international
recognition which saw him assigned to the Austrian cup finals amongst other high
profile events.
It will, however, be as a judge that Martin will be appearing at the new National
Hockey Centre next year where he will be responsible for game activities during the
competition.
Annabelle (Dino) Willox, a former Faculty Officer in the Strathclyde Business
School before relocating to Brisbane, has been appointed as an umpire for the
second consecutive Games.
Annabelle represented her home nation of Wales in Delhi in 2010 and has once
again been nominated by FIH as one of the 12 umpires for the women’s hockey
competition.
Annabelle took up umpiring during her playing days and has used her move to
Australia to good advantage by getting involved in officiating men’s club matches to
maintain her high standards. She was back in Europe in last month when she was
performing at the European Nations Championships in Brussels.
