The Digital Television Transition
Consumers who want to continue to receive their
local broadcast television stations after February
17, 2009 must either purchase a TV set equipped
with a digital tuner or purchase a digital-to-analog
converter box that will convert those over-the-air
digital signals into analog so that they can be
displayed on an analog device. Analog-only TVs
should continue to work as before with cable and
satellite TV services.
Between January 1, 2008, and March 31, 2009, all
U.S. households will be eligible to request up to
two coupons, worth $40 each, to be used toward
the purchase of digital-to-analog converter boxes.
How do I get a coupon? The senior center has
coupon applications and more information. A
certified converter box is expected to cost
between $50 and $70.

Safe Cooking
Did you know that grilling meat on a barbeque
increases the production of carcinogens
(compounds that can cause certain cancers)? The
good news is that there are plenty of things you
can do to reduce that risk. Below are five tips to
help you enjoy and have a safe and delicious
barbeques.
1. Marinate meats for at least 12 hours. There is
evidence that suggests this can reduce the
amount of carcinogens caused by grilling by
as much as 99%
2. Try kabobs instead of large pieces of meat,
chicken or fish. The less time the food spends
on the grill the better
3. Meats should be grilled at low temperatures
and turned over frequently to avoid charring.
Try not to poke meats wih a fork, since this
releases juices and will tend to make the meat
tough and dry.
4. Remove burnt or blackened parts of meat
before eating.
5. Trim most of the fat from your meat before
grilling to avoid drips and flare-ups, which
lead to charring and burnt food.
